As Kees says, all Eschers are Thuringians but not all thuringians are eschers. In my opinion – judging both by the vintage of the box and the color/consistency of the stone – this thuringian is an escher.

I have one just like it; same size and same type of box (the stone by the way is mounted in the box). Mine is "Celebrated" brand, army green in color. Excellent stone.

I'd agree - I think your quest is over, my friend (and for a nice price too, I might add).

And how can I tell if it is an escher or a thuringan? I have a Thuringan, but could it be an escher in disguise?

Vintage of the stone is, I think, the defining factor. That, and convincing yourself that, although the name Escher does not appear on the box, the stone is of the same quality as those that people call Escher.

The "thuringians" that are not eschers (i.e. the newly mined ones) are darker, harder, and faster. Someone who owns one will need to verify this, but I think they're all dark gray. I don't think they come in the light-green to bluish-gray spectrum of the old thuringians/"eschers."

But enough of this! Tell us how it performs. Results, not classifications, are the holy grail.

Mine is definately not new. Not sure how old though. It's in a cardboard box so I guess it probably isn't but If the difference is so minor then I will tell myself it must be to make myself feel better!

Yes, and thanks for the help there, I believe you have set an example in gentlemanly ebaying. My quest is not over yet. I would like some bigger ones. Are they all so small?

These are vintage Eschers! This one is 6 x 1 x 1/2:

This one is 5 x 2 1/2 x 3/4! I believe both of these are standard sizes!
