Weird razor, how to hone?

That's a macrotome razor. It was used to slice thin sections of tissue for examination under a microscope. We've discussed them before - do a search for "microtome" or "macrotome" to see the earlier discussions and some photos of the equipment. Puma also made them, and a few other companies as well (I've seen one by some french or swiss company, for example).

thanks mparker .. I couldn't remember the name of them ;-)

Hmmm. It looks just like a normal razor, apart from the grind missing on one side. I'm pretty sure it is for shaving with rather than for scientific or musical use.

I'll check out the other threads on microtome and take another look at it tonight.

The second one down is a Surgeons Razor. I think this is what you have on your hands. The description states "In the old times barbers were also surgeons. This razor can also be used for head shaving and shaving others. It would be quite difficult to shave oneself with it."

He's right.

One side of the razor is kept flat to allow super thin slices to be shaved off a tissue much like one would cut a slice from a block of cheeze, then throw it on a microscope slide.
