I'm curious about this demonstration of knife sharpness in the following video from a post by Vassili at BladeForums.
My razors pass the HHT but they never whittle like that. They just cut through. Is this whittling a sign of an even sharper edge? :hmmm:

No, but that is pretty cool.
I think that's a sign of a slightly less sharp edge. I've done it with my razors and then a few passes on the ultra fine hone later they clip the hair in half.

Although keep in mind this is just a test, if the blade doesn't pass, it may still be shave ready.
I agree - for me it's about figuring out the relationship between the test (regardless of which one you use) and the actual shave. Repeating the process many times let's you build up a picture of how the outcome of the test predicts the actual shave. Whittling a hair may give you great shaves, whereas I might need to get the hairs cutting cleanly. Work out what works for you.Quote:

Mike I have seen you say this a coupe times and I think your right. Im new to strait shaving and honing straits. But not honing in general. My Boker for example after I hone it will pass the HHT flying colors. But my Antalope is a bit harder to hone and it likes to split the hair then cut thrue. BUT the Antalope is a better shaver hands down its just smoother feeling.This make sense?
It makes absolute sense...
The smoother feeling may be a slightly duller edge, I've said it many times, there really is such a thing as too sharp.
HHT is a test of sharpness, but it varies from person to person depending on the thickness shape, and condition of their hair.
I generally sharpen razors a little beyond where I like mine to be, I've had too many people ask for super sharp, or question weither I could get it sharper... The answer is yes, I can get my blades sharper, I can go sharper still from what I send out now, but it is not comfortable to shave with, and the edge won't last as long.
As these members learn to hone, or develop their skill, They begin to understand the difference between super sharp and sharp enough, and they generally start asking me "to hone it the way I like it", or for a smooth feeling edge...
When you start out a super sharp edge can make up for poor skin stretching, and angle, but it will also give you razor burn easier, a smooth edge requires better technique, but will also give better results.
So in essence you have discovered the blessings of a slightly duller edge in your Antelope.
Another good example of this is the razor pictured in my signature, notice how the hair bends before cutting? I have other razors that will cut on contact, but this razor is my best.
That is why shaving is the only true test.
P.S. try stropping your Boker on newspaper.

That hair looked strange, more like mono filament fishing line. I did a video with one of my razors I sold, a Friodur. Popping hairs is easy, splitting one inhalf is a bit more difficult. FYI, that hair came out of a brush so don’t get any strange ideas where that curly hair came from.
I just a 4/8K Norton (after working up to the 4K) and then 0.5 chromium oxide and leather.

Mike every thing you say I have have started noticing in my short time strait shaving. I shaved 4 times with the Antalope NO BURN at all I re-honed the Boker thinking maybe somthing was slighty off with the "teeth" or maybe I got a little slopy stroping or rolled the edge a little one sided or somthing so I took alot of time with it and got it HHT sharp ....again. I got the same results ...some burn and it was a little harsh but like you stated when the hair touched it just looked like it poped in half with litte effort.
I aso noticed my shaves feel better with a 3or4 dy beard vrs a 1or2 day. I will try the news paper. Should the paper be done right after honing or last after regular stroping?

Any tests using hair so depends upon your hair type. I was reminded of this last week when my Brother-in-Law was visiting from Toronto. I was honinh a couple of blades in the kitchen and cahtting with him. He asks me how I tel it's sharp, so I try a HHT for him. My hair is so fine I've always had trouble passing that test off the hones (it works off a pasted paddle though!). So I ask him for a hair from his young and bushy 21-year-old head. I couldn't believe it -- compared to mine it was like a copper wire. And not only did I pop his hair easily, I managed to fillet it too.
Light bulb moment -- my honing is OK, my hair is not!
I know my beard hair is like cable!
