Norton 4/8k vs DMT EEF
It seems that the DMT D8EE can be used in place of the 4/8k from Norton. Would any of you suggest getting this rather then the Norton. This would avoid the lapping process but would also lose the 4k. Would losing the 4K be a disadvantage?
Thanks

Thanked: 11I'm no expert I've only really been at this a couple of years and only have 3 Razors so these are not definitive answers.
From what I've read the D8EE cuts as fast as the Norton 4K.
I just got one to replace my Norton and I've managed to hone up a brand new, previously unhoned wapi. I had some problems but that was more down to my technique and getting used to the DMT, the feel is very different to the Norton. I managed to get the wapi to pass the HHT straight off the DMT something I've not managed with my two other razors when using the Norton, usually I have to use Chromium Oxide paste.
So all in all I'd say you're not loosing much by not having the 4K

Thanked: 150I have both and would say that you can get by with just the DMT. Cuts faster with no wear, no soaking, no lapping and less storage space taken up.
They are on sale at craftsmanstudios.com, http://www.craftsmanstudio.com/html_p/T!D8.htm
If you get the DMT D8F at the same time you could pretty much restore any razor to working condition. The D8EE has no problem removing 1k grit scratches.
The only down side is that it is a bit rougher than the norton 8k, you might not like shave right off of the D8EE (for that matter I don't like the shave off of the norton either, but some do)
So it's your choice, I'll just say that it can be done and that it's what you want out of a stone that should be the deciding factor.

I shaved with the edge right off the D8EE for a couple of weeks waiting for the funds to get a bench strop and come CrO.
While the CrO makes a noticeably better (closer and especially smoother) shave, the shave right off the D8EE was completely acceptable. It got better after about 200 passes on the linen side of my Illinois strop.

Thanked: 286I've only used the dmt1200 but is should imagine the dmt leaves a much toothier edge. Thats one of the reason's why comong of dmt you can pass hht quite easy. Don't quote me on this i never used dmt that is finer than 1200. Infact i just orderd the duo dmt 325/ 600. I certainly won't be shaving straight of them!

Thanked: 5d8ee can certainly be used as a subtitute for 4/8k norton, and it will eliminate the need to worry about lapping....long as you don't mind the feel, which is a lot different, you'll be fine.
I think the shave right off d8ee and a good stropping's actually pretty solid.
Shop around, they can be had <$80 shipped w/o resorting to auction sites.
