So I got this duck thinking it wasn't as bad as it really is. Well, the ebay pics lied, lied bad. Its horrible and quite possibly beyond my time restraints. Maybe even beyond my ability.

edit: if its going to take more than a couple hours to get this to shave ready status, I'd rather get it off to someone else to hone it or give it away for price paid. If anyone's interested.
A lot of hone wear, but it looks like it still have many good shaves. I would just hone it up and use it. But if you want it to be beautiful, I have no idea.
Uneven hone wear too. More wear at the toe, less at the heel. Consequently, the toe is a lot shorter than the heel.Quote:

Seems like the consensus is it'll hone up pretty good in less than an hour.
My concern is the excessive hone wear towards the toe. Not as visible in the pictures, but the toe is really worn down and the heel is hardly worn at all, causing the difference in blade width. I'll go back to the trenches with this one.

Update. Pfft. My concerns were stupid and silly after all. Honed it up and it shaves great! Thats two ducks I've saved. ; ) Score another for the good guys. Or at least score another for me! Haha! Now to shave with one.... So little hair, so many razors....
:mad: I can get the first 3/4 from the heel razor sharp. Damn it takes a good edge. But no dice on the last 1/4 where the blade is really messed up. Marker test is showing a good bevel, I'm about to give up on this duck again and start grinding it down to a more managable width at the heel.

Wait, could you clarify what you intend to do? I don't understand why you want to grind the heel that is honing up fine in order to accommodate for the toe that is not. Are you talking about grinding the spine?
If the marker test indicates that the toe is being honed, what's not working for you?
Toe's not sharp. Its just frustrating, I finally understand what makes a honemeister a meister. Knowledge of all the different ways a blade can be ****ed up and how to fix them.
It probably just needs more time on the stones to reset the bevel on the toe. The previous owner wasn't very kind to this little duck. I'll go back to the trenches again.
edit: reset the bevel, toe shaves ATG at 1k, I'll do a few more strokes on the 1k and then progress up. I think I see the light at the end of the tunnel.
update: Ok, it spot shaves pretty good, but for the life of me I can't get the technique down to shave my face. :mad:
Are you using any sort of angled or rolling-x stroke to work the toe?
Hmmm.... You said the marker test showed the bevel was set for the whole length? That would mean that you're honing the entire length. Also means you shouldn'[t have to use any sort of rolling X stroke or any of that stuff. You think there's any chance that the toe might have got that way because of some trauma? after which someone took a grinder to it ... and removed the temper?
Just speculation. If it's honing evenly then it should get sharp evenly.

Well, it turns out that the spine wear was uneven. Go figure. So I reground the spine and reset the bevel on 7/8 of the blade. The very toe was too far gone to fix the spine there, so I just lifted the razor up at the end of the stroke.
Yup, definitely took more than two hours of work. Sat there reading a book and ground away at the spine, resetting the bevel. An hour or two after doing that, and the bevel was reset along most of the razor. Then I did the regular progression and it shaves well now. The toe is still a problem, but its cutting hairs, so I don't know if theres much more I can do to fix that.
Test shaved her today and damn! BBS!!! I am one happy duck owner. Happier knowing I didn't give up on the duck in the end. Even though it did take me a couple of hours of honing and cost me a couple hours of sleep.
Probably won't hold a candle to that Engels I saved for you :D. That should be there by now...
