Honing question

I have a Wostenholm IXLR. I can get it fairly sharp but it still has some pull. I'm using three layers of tape and I've tried the pyramid methods both conservative and aggressive(Norton4000/8000 and a blue Chinese stone at 12,000). I just can't get that last bit of sharpness I need to make it shave well. I also have a regular Wostenholm wedge that is the same way.

One other piece of info. The Wostenholm is an Ebro which has one side flat and one 1/4 hollow. I can't for the life of me figure out if I need to tape on side or what to get it even.
Any ideas?

I have never used 3 layers of tape but others do and get edges so we know that works, you have tried the pyramids and your getting something .. I am going to assume that you have tried throwing in another aggressive pyramid already?????

From the point you are now, I would say stick it on the 4k and keep it there until you get it popping arm hair easily from heel to toe, no cheating and calling it pretty good, it has to pop those suckers with barely a touch...
Once there, go 20-30 even light laps on the 8k... I cant give you a lap count on the Chinese I don't know the stone well enough, so that part is up to you ... 50 linen/100 leather and shave it, that should pull it into line, then you can tweak it from there if you want, with more 12k or perhaps .50 Cr paste, your call....

Right I did do the aggressive as well. I'll give the method you mentioned a shot. It sounds good and should work. I'm always a little hesitant to overhone but that really makes sense. One of them is the Ebro which is 1/4 hollow and flat on the other side. That does give me a challenge!

I found through my struggles, if I did not have a good bevel set; it did not matter how good my strokes were are the 4k/8k level.

I also found that my strokes were not as good as i thought and even though i didnt think i was applying pressure...i was applying pressure.

I usually use 1 layer of tape and may add 2 more layers at the end if I want to do the Zowada Double Bevel method.

That is one thing I have to careful of. I tend to put pressure on the blade so I'm constantly reminding myself not to do that! I haven't read the method your using but I'll do some checking on it. The more info the better:-)

Standard hollows I have no trouble with at all it's just the wedges or combo's like the Ebro.

I did what you suggested and it worked like a charm. I did the number on the 4000 then 8000 and finally the cro2 and stropped the number you suggested. It's perfect--THANKS!!!!

Hello Phil. The Ebro you mentioned sounds like to me to be a razor for cutting specimens for a microscope. If that is the case it may be difficult to get it honed right for shaving.

I didn't even know they made such a thing. It looks just like any other wedge from Wostenholm except for the straight side and then the 1/4 hollow side. I thought about using a couple of narrow pieces of tape on the flat side and none on the hollow side. I'm not sure what else to try. I've seen them on our forum here for shaving but maybe they didn't know what they had--like me:-)

If your talking about the Chinese 12k, (The one's you buy from woodcraft) I would keep the slurry the same as the host hone. If you use a Norton slurry stone, I have one myself, it's much more gritty and will most likely alter the effects of the 12k. It's really a Norton prep stone, I don't believe you'll get as smooth an edge as you can. I believe it's called contamination. The only hones I swap slurries on are the BBW and Coticule. Get yourself a Chinese 12k Slurry...There are some on the classifieds....Rich

I would be very interested to know how the C12k slurry works after the 8k Norton, my guess is that it is going to drop the sharpness level because of the slurry but I would like to know for sure....

Or you can do what i did... grab a hacksaw and make your own slurry stone.

In case you are interested, such a blade, used for cutting thin specimens, is called a microtome.

Ok, the name sounds familiar. It's really funny that it has a barbers notch and looks so much like a regular razor. Very interesting--thanks!

I think I have the origin of the name "Ebro". It comes from a valley in Spain where they used a microtome to section a type of plant which grows in that area on the Atlantic side of Spain. At least I can stop trying to hone the thing and hang onto it for a conversation piece:-)
