Nice stone. Good luck with it. I just made one hone out of a piece of rock from Cwm Idwall in N. Wales. It was hard work but fun and now I am looking forward to try it on a razor.

I'm wondering if you have any idea about how to prep the surface. The worked jasper pieces that I've seen are all highly polished. Would honing on the highly-polished surface work or would it need to be "roughed" a bit, like with 1000 grit abrasive paper. Does anyone (hi_bud_gl or McWolf or ?) have any ideas?
What a cool project. I'm envisioning the final product, and think it will turn out beautiful. I sure hope it cuts well!

Once the stone is cut, im going to follow regular lapping procedures, using the 400/1000 diamond plate i have...may polish some if needed.
One thing ive noticed, with the harder stones, is that its better to use permanent markers, instead of pencil, to make the lapping grid...ensures a flat surface. Jasper has the same hardness scale as hard Arkansas, apparently. Hope it performs as good or better.

I thought with all the talk of picking up rocks to use as hones, you all might enjoy a look at the Jade hone a friend of mine is now using as a polisher....
So pretty - it's almost a shame to sharpen on... - Foodie Forums
He is also a str8 user, and says it works beautifully, though a little slow.
i wonder if you could lap it on a belt sander mine has a long flat base and the belts are 4inch. wide get it flat then ues a glas plat with 1000 grit would speed it up i think, but when i think i have problems
