Paste finish vs stone finish

I have fallen in love with my 12K superstone as
my "finish" hone. After that I strop on canvas that
is getting very gray and dirty because I have wiped
some of the 12K Superstone swarf laden slurry on it.
After canvas I strop with leather with an invisible dusting
of CeOx.

I have started wiping my canvas with a damp bit of
paper towel when done now that it is finally broken in.
I think at this point that it is pasted as much as
it needs to be. I also consider it to be self pasting as bits
of steel oxidize and turn into fine abrasive.

Just a bit of an update on using .1 micron iron oxide and at this early stage it's looking good,first up i chose the razor that's had the most shaves since honing which is about thirty even though it was still very shavable,i gave it ten strokes a side and it was like it had just come of the stone and really smooth,the other razor was one i have just recieved and after i finished on the stones i did one shave and got a super smooth arkansas shave as usual,then i gave it five strokes a side on the iron oxide and shaved the next day it was slightly sharper and still super smooth,now i need to experiment with different amount of strokes at different levels of sharpness but if i want to touch up with paste it will definitely be the iron oxide

I tried the staring method but I only managed to dull the edge. Must have been bad technique.:eek: This look obviously isn't good for razors when using the staring method.

I finish on the Naniwa 12k.

The edges are significantly sharper & smoother than my 8K + cro ox, but not quite as sharp or smooth as 12K + .5 paste on a leather paddle strop. The paste build ups on my leather paddle strop though, and the small increase in sharpness isn't worth the trouble of periodically cleaning the build-up off the leather - and the build up is a problem since it ends up with ridges instead of being flat and even.

I suspect using webbing with the paste instead or felt & a spray would solve the build-up problem, but the edges off the 12K (using no pressure) are so nice I haven't bothered to order a webbing & felt strop to find out.

eleblu you never answered my pm about the micron size of the iron oxide and if i'd made a mistake,as far as i've been able to tell it is 0.1 micron and the chromium oxide is 0.3 micron,i have done a bit more with both oxides and i'm very happy with them as the 0.3 chro ox really puts a super sharp fine edge and i'm thinking of making a paddle strop sort of thing and try it like a stone,for touch ups of older shavers a couple strokes is so sharp but a little harsh sharp but i'm kind of spoilt by te smooth edges i normaly get,i will also do the same with the 0.1 micron iron ox and use it the same but just for when i need slight touch up and smoothening and to finish of after the chro ox,i've also been testing as a finish after my black arkansas and it's enhancing the sharpness and buttery smoothness of the stone which is real nice to shave with,i'm still experimenting and i could be using the wrong micron sizes but it's keeping me busy and it's got me thinking of how a 30,000 grit stone would finish like compared to what i'm getting with the arks and pastes

Since he said it was 15k, that would be about 1 micron, not .1 micron. The abrasive in my 16k shapton is .92

I contacted Larry from whipped dog to see if i understood the micron sizes properly here's what he wrote back,

Kremer Pigments has a European branch. I first became aware of their 0.3 micron chromium oxide thru some SRP responses by guys from Europe in which they expressed satisfaction. When I tracked down how to order in the US, (New York), I ran into their Iron Oxide powder and investigated. The technical details sheet said the particle size is spherical in shape, which is good, and is actually smaller than 0.1 micron. It is 0.09 micron, and I rounded up to 0.1 micron. Before I started using Iron Oxide, I communicated with the technical department of Kremer Pigments. I was concerned that the average particle size was 0.09 microns, but that there were a lot of much bigger particles. They assured me that the variance in particle size was quite small.


After using it alot, I can assure you the 0.1 micron particle size is just that.

I just reread your message. I noticed that you asked about the chromium oxide particle size also. Everything I said about the iron oxide applies to their chromium oxide. I asked about particle size purity, etc. Both products are just simply great high quality products.

Have done a bit more experimenting and because i rubbed the blade of my favourite Joseph rogers against my razor box(the blade opens up sometimes) i needed to do a full sharpening on it,started with my soft then hard and finished on my black arkansas and as usual i got a super fine polished hair splitting edge,shaved with it twice and it was superbly sharp and velvetly smooth and before i shaved last night i stropped it on the iron oxide strop,i set out to do ten strokes per side but i lost count think i ended up doing fifteen or so strokes instead more than i usually do and the results were unexpected,it polished the edge more than i thought it would and i can't think of a word for how smooth it was the suprise was the sharpness,more than the cerium or chromium ever gave and out of curiosity even though it means little i did a hht test and it was like cutting air even when shaving with it,i will continue to work with these oxides as it has my curiosity pumped right up and i'm definitly buying more oxides from whipped dog
