Do you hone Multiple razors???? a poll for you

So I would like a vote or two from you,but I am looking for Experience on this poll not opinions...

Please only vote if you

Hone about 10 or more different razors per week..

Use / Have used at least 3 different honing systems..

Hone different types of razors ie Wedges/ Hollows / old / new

You have no fear of the next razor because you have honed one like it or worse...

I know some don't like the term "Honemiester" but that is who I am looking for to answer here...


So here is the question:

Do you have a Goto system???? Is there one Stone/Hone that is the Best????

I voted Naniwa and let the razor decide. The Naniwas are the go-to's for me, but I'm not afraid to go to a plan b or c if the razor needs it. I also vary my finishers for different razors.

Chances are I don't hone 10 razors every week though I can say I have honed that many razors in a week a time or two. I voted anyway ;-) I'm guessing there aren't too many members who can honestly say they hone 10 razors a week but I might be wrong.... you know the rest. :p

My vote was for "let the razor decide" but currently the chosera 1k, norton 4 & 8 single grits are the foundation of my honing on every razor. I don't go to the 1k unless there is a need but the 4 & 8 usually. Finishing could be an escher, jnat, WOA, coticule or shapton pro 15k & 30k cause that is what I've got. I have honed with the lower grit shaptons and with the naniwas but sold them since what I'm using now has become my personal preference.

My go to system is also naniwa but 1/3k is Chosera 5/10/12k are superstones, I finish on Jnats mainly. I have a few different Jnat finishers to accomodate as many steel varieties as possible.
Sometimes I use 4/8k norton instead of naniwas.
For some rare razors that do not respond very well to Jnats, I can finish on Coticule or Thuringian.

I have a 2 full Jnat progression after 3k Synthetic, a nagura progression and a 3 stone proigression, I use those only if I do not have to hone many razors because it is more time consuming.

I understand exactly what you mean Jimmy, and your opinion is very valued because you have tried so many different ways...
To me on this poll it is precisely what I am after, not the people that have only honed one way, and never experimented / worked with other systems...

I hone about 10-14 razors a week, but may be a little biased. I started out on the coticule and learned that inside and out. Later on I experimented with other finishers (CF, Escher, JNat, Thurry) and found most of them gave a slight improvement over the coticule in terms of sharpness, but also a slight dropoff in smoothness.

I later messed around with synthetics for my honing progression, but found them no faster than a coticule dilucot as I already had that nailed and am fairly consistent with it. A chosera 1K still does all my bevel work and I absolutely love it.

These days though I usually just finish on the coticule as I find those edges quite suitable for my face. A dilucot after setting the bevel takes me 10-15 minutes to finish and I get really good edges from this. Sometimes I break out the escher/vintage thuri to give my final polish, but don't find it really necessary at all.

Thanks Glen, I didn't realize it was multiple choice or I would have included norton, escher, coticule and other :gaah:

I've been using the Shaptons in 1,4 and 8k plus my J-Nat the most recently. That seems to give pretty consistent results that I like..! :) I use the Chosera 1k as a bevel setter exclusively, whether I go with the Naniwa's or Shaptons after that.

It does depend on the razor I guess though.... Hmm, tough question! :D

I guess the reason I went with the method I mentioned is that this works for me whatever the razor, whatever the grind and even if I get a total stinker I can put a great edge on it with that method. So if I had to sell every other stone and just stick with one set, thats what I'd pick.

A little bit tardy to the party but I voted for the stones I use that are listed & 'other' for some not listed & 'letting the razor decide.'

I mostly get eBay edge rebuilds from noobs & honestly my goto will often be a DMTC especially on wedges but on some razors the first few strokes will see me changing pretty quick to the 220 Shap GS with Iyoto slurry. It's fast & leaves a nice finish with minimal chipping compared to the DMT which can turn some razors into Spyderco lookalikes. I used to use a full range of Kings from 300 grit - 8k but prefer the speed of the ShapGS & lately the J version Pros.

Well, I did not know I could make multiple choices so I selected the Shapton Pro. But..tonite I honed 2 razors, a W&B 6/8 and a TI Le Grelot 1/4 hollow with a visible nick in the edge. I used The DMT 600 & 1200, Chosera 1K with slurry & water only, the Shapton Pro 2K, 5K, 8K, Norton 8K, Shapton Pro 12K and a Escher y/g, soft, and finished with a Chrome Ox 0.5 micron paddle strop. Next time I may use the Naniwa SS instead? Funny how I always come back to the Norton 8K.

Far from a 'meister', but 112 blades since late last July. 4 more to do this wkend, unless I finish some scales and duck project.
'Started w/ norton 1/4 and dmt8k. Kind help here convinced me to change 8k - went to the Nani & have been pleased. First finisher was c12k, then N-Asagi (ohhhh I love it). Since trying the coti, the only stones now used have been an Atoma for bevels, coti for everything else except finishing. Sometimes finish w/ the coti, sometimes asagi. After bevel, my experience mirrors Harvitz - coti is the fastest way to get to finishing. There are many stones I've not yet had the pleasure of - escher/thurry, shapton, charnley. Recent reading makes me more curious about the nani 12 - especially when you factor in price. I know the costly finishers deserve their fine reputation, but after the asagi, I doubt I'll part with that much money for another finisher. I'm in the wrong income bracket.

I choose other because that was the only option matching my experience.
95% Escher,
2 % synthtic hone
1 % charnley forest
1 %Japanese stone.

Bumping this one time so maybe a few of the guys that haven't seen it yet can vote...

Right now I am bouncing back and forth between an Amakusa and Shapton 1k for bevels, then Shams mystery stone, up to a yellow coti and finishing on a Thuri.

I haven't honed many lately, but I've come to really adore the reliability of my full set of Naniwa SS hones, except for bevel setting. Now if a blade needs only a little to do the bevel, I'll still just use the SS 1k, but it's a little too slow for my taste and ADD tendencies. My bevel setting of most razors in need a bona fide new bevel is done with a Naniwa Chosera 600 and/or 800, followed by a Shapton Pro 1k, then the Naniwa SS 1k and up the Naniwa ladder. Finishing is done with whatever suits my mood!

I've gone to naturals for bevel set to final finsih and have been having fun. For chips or edge restore I use the DMT cadre. DMT or Atoma for raising slurry. Gotta agree with Kelly the 1K Shapton is the no messin-around bevel setter. If I had the $$ I get a set of those new Suehiro stones. Still learning along the way. Hooyah!
