Watch out for this one!
Just spotted this on the bay, and thought I would warn the newbies...
Vintage WB Speed Hamburg Hollow Ground England Bovine Horn Straight Razor 5 8" | eBay
Its plain to see the burn marks where this poor razor was put to a buffer in order to clean it up. It will NEVER be usable again as it is now. This is where the risks of buying come to play. Was this buffed to death by the seller? or by whomever the seller obtained the razors from? Were the other razors for sale also buffed to death? Just because they are not showing the blue, does not mean they were not handled improperly. I myself would have strong reservations and want a return policy before considering a purchase.

Good catch, thanks for the heads up ! :tu

I have seen some rainbow patina, but that is really dark and the fact that it is in the same spot on both sides makes it even more suspicious. Doesn't seem like it was taking to the buffers from the looks of the rest of the blade, but rather a flame put to it. Either way it isn't one I would be willing to take a chance on.

Looks like burnt toast to me .........

can buffing weels actually do this?
looks like they tried to weld a crack instead

Flame,,,
It is quite obvious that this razor has never touched a buffer..
Looks like some mental giant held their lighter to it

I especially like when Ebay sellers, such as this one, neglect a proper description with the statement, "Please see pictures for details." I suppose they assume such a statement is going to magically replace what most people will think: "Here we have an absolute atrocity that was once what appears to be a straight razor. Now it's good for spreading butter or removing bugs from your windshield.":p When a seller bypasses a good description, his/her level on my trust-o-meter goes way down.

It had never occurred to me that somebody would put flame to a razor. But yes, a buffer can most certainly create this sort of heat damage. Even if that were not the case for this particular razor, buffer heating is a very real thing.
