Aoutch ! :dropjaw:
Well... Honestly what's so special about this straight ? It's not even NOS, big or whatever...
I would give for it about 20$ if I'd saw one like this on an antiques store...
More than 400$ ?! This is madness....
Never have seen those scales. The purely scales buyers are hungry for this no doubt, Thaeris, it has nothing to do with the blade on this one, trust me.
Celluloïd for 400$.... I'd save it for a seven day set in tortoise....
Damndest-looking roo I ever saw! Just saying!
You're going too slangy for me here. :)
For exactly 385$, with sending :

Crikey. Some other people out there place a massively higher value on that razor than I would. Is it supposed to be a crocodile or alligator on the scales? Looks like a very cylindrical lizard and the kangaroo on the blade looks like a child's drawing of a tyrannosaurus rex or a bipedal rat.
I agree -- it's a hefty price; but lovers of figural scales are no less crazy than the rest of us.
What I find alarming is that the seller advertises shipping of this high[er]-priced item for $2.01, via USPS First-Class Mail; I imagine that his offer for worldwide shipping will be at equally low rates, with no provision for speedier delivery, tracking, or insurance.
It's a salamander eating a worm. Good luck symbol in some parts of the world. Might make a good bass lure.
Not only is it a very rare set of scales, the blade is nice and clean, and matching box. For a serious collector, this is a prize. Perhaps the seller had no idea it would sell for such money, hence the bare bones shipping price? I know if it were me buying it, I would insist on shipping with tracking and insurance. And for that kind of money, the seller would be a fool not to do it.
Looks like another Aussie icon, the Blue Tongued lizard.

This is another one that falls into the more money than sense category.
It has to do with the rarity for the collectors along with the over all condition.
Not my cup of tea, but they still have business going on to boot.
A few pieces from them that also recently sold.

People have different hobbies. To many it's crazy to pay $1000 for a straight razor no matter what it's made of, but $1000 razors sell all the time and many here don't think it's that crazy.
I suppose it's a rare scale design, the colors are good, they're in good condition without major warping that I can see - seems like it's a good collectable object for those who place value into those things.
How many of us here have one basic razor, one strop, one grocery store brush and soap? I would venture to say not many - those who don't get into this as a hobby, way beyond the basic utilitarian purpose, tend to not hang around forums :)
I'd say it's probably similar with the collectors of those scales...
I do kind of like the way the tail wraps around the pivot pin and the tongue loops the wedge end. Until this thread I did not know there was a sub class of scale collectors. In general I really like collectors....they are respectful hoarders, then they die and their precious cargo spills out into the public again. Some of them seem stranger than others....like the Japanese Hone Collectors that never put a razor on a hone.....but who am I to say what is weird? Whenever I purchase new underwear the first thing I do is cut the crotch out with scissors.
Sold at $1281.89!
Wow, some crazy bidding there. What's more, this wasn't the work of two bidders going at each other, but rather, there were 4 bidders placing bids above $500.

Does it cook and do dishes?
Lot of $$ for a piece of celluloid shaped like a salamander. Seems to me it should have a 'Roo on it.
I remember seeing one with extremely fancy scales(atleast that was the description) that was BIN $10,000 and yes that is 4 zeros. I think it sold too. Scale collectors will pay alot of money for rare scales. There are some scales where they only made a couple of them. If they are going to cost me what I could use as a down payment on a house I will stay away. This link has some nice looking scales. STRAIGHT RAZOR FANCY Here is a set that sold for $15,000.
