A few razors on Ebay - what to choose?

Hello folks,

I am a new registered member even though I have been browsing the forum for some time. I am fairly new to the straight razor shaving; gave it a go a while ago with a razor that made the shaving a painful experience. Gave up after 20 times or so, but would really get the hang of it and stop supporting P&G buying all those Gilette blades.

So, the question is, I did some Ebay browsing here in Germany and found a few that could could maybe fit the bill?

Would appreciate your feedback on them, and perhaps also what an OK price would be for the item. I know it's a bit like asking how long a rope is, but I've heard some smart answers even to that question.

I take it they are on the German eBay. There is an SRP Mentor in Heidelberg region, doorsch. If I were you I'd PM him and ask his advice on which razors and reasonable price. We don't quote cost estimates in the forum proper. He can also give you full info on any aspect of shaving you might need. And if you live near him I'm sure he would offer a one-on-one session to help you understand straight shaving in general.

Welcome -- Several problems here. 1) no one can tell without pictures, and I doubt anyone is going to go browsing through the eBay pics via your links. 2) one of us might be either selling or bidding on one of those razors, hence a conflict of sorts could exist. 3) valuation isn't allowed on SRP, so "is this an OK price" isn't going to get a response (and a OK price is what your willing to pay and the buyer will take). 4) A big variable is the reliability and reputation of the seller, which can probably only be well judged by you or someone in your vicinity.

Having said all that, there are a bunch of European members here, maybe one can help you some.

Thanks for your reply. Yes, they are on the German ebay, but I had to choose an english forum due to my limited German knowledge. Live a bit far away from Heidelberg but will PM doorsch as per your suggestion.

Look up Ralf Aust in Solingen. http://rasiermesser-manufaktur.de/

You can order one of his excellent razors directly from the factory. Herr Aust is an outstanding craftsman and his razors (I have two, one of them is the razor being shown in the website introduction-outstanding blade!!) are up there with some of the best I have used. His prices start at about 100 Euros. Good hunting....

The Ralf Aust in Solingen link seems very interesting, may well be that I pay a bit more and grab one of his razors! Danke Schön

We will a do the best to help you out in any way!! Aust has really great razors and there normally sent out shave ready...

I really like Wacker, where you might have to pay a bit more on their razors...

Another possibility is Koraat, a really smart and tough guy...he also makes beautiful custom razors, but also ones for starters...

FWIW --

I believe that Dovo and Boker are both Solingen-made. They're reliable, and you can buy a Dovo "Best Quality" (their least-expensive line) for less than $100 in the US. Low-end Bokers are a bit more, but in that ballpark.

They should be cheaper in Germany, except for VAT.

They're not hand-made, or highly-decorated, razors, but they shave nicely.

PS -- bias -- I own a new Dovo "Best Quality", and a vintage Boker. There's not much difference.

Wow, so much help, thanks to all of you! Even though it doesn't seem like I will be buying any of the razors I set out to buy, with all these suggestions I am sure to find something else that will get me started on this road.

Shopping on EBay as a newcomer is tricky at best, hard to get a truly shave ready razor ,, why not try our classifieds and pick up a good starter razor to give a good shot at it ,? At least it will be ready to shave , then it's up to you. Good luck. Tc
