Welcome to SRP.
It's a fine looking razor going by the photos. I have just purchased one privately and I payed $95 for it, and I don't think mine is in as good a nick as this one on ebay. I'm sure there will be a bidding frenzy for it in the last minute or so, but go for it, and good luck.

So very close. It's been awhile since I've gotten much of anything off of eBay. Next time I'll make my way for it. I don't know if I should use some sniping software or not.
Also, apologies for not introducing myself earlier. First point being on about a razor on eBay. Despite the to do about the dubl duck brand, the duck moniker has special meaning to me either way.
One brought $182 a week ago and a questionable looking Satin Wedge went for something like $90 yesterday. Might have been fine but the picture was poor.

a wonderedge in good condition went for $90 just the other day. ducks don't even tempt me because i know that it could be rusted, pitted and honed down to 3/8, with cracked scales and people will still go into a frenzy

I'm glad I've already acquired just about a full gaggle of ducks. Now if I could only find that Stainless Duck.
They are great shavers but the prices are starting to get out of hand.
Can someone with a passion for ducks explain their appeal? They're hardly alone in being made of great steel. To my eye, there's nothing particularly distinctive about their looks for mid-20th-century razors. Do people like the tubular cracked ice/faux MOP/lucelite scales? Is it that they're "collectible" because of all the different models, the elusive "grim reaper," etc.? Is there something special about the way they shave, besides the quality of the steel? I remember Lynn saying they have very flexy blades, which some people like.
I hope I'm not offending any duck-lovers, but I just don't get it. Loving the curves and profile of a 19th-c. Wade and Butcher makes perfect sense to me. But when I look at this Satin Edge that went for around $130, I think for the money, if I wanted a blade of that period and style and so on I'd buy a Filarmonica. Scratch that, for the money I'd buy two or three filarmonicas.
This isn't meant to be provocative; I'm just curious.

For me at least some of the appeal of the DD or other razors is simply their style and some collectability factor. I wanted a Goldedge and Wonderedge because of their often proclaimed shavability. The collector in me thought it would be fun to get a complete set, one of each. I am also drawn to certain blade contours and covered tang razors.
Lots of reasons people go for certain things and why they pay what they do. A satinedge is not that rare a piece but if it comes together with a square point, or round point, or whatever, a collector may pay more just because another just like it may be a long ways off. Two years ago I bought many, nearly mint razors off eBay for $15-20. Today if I wanted to buy any of those again I'd have to pay 3 times that because of the market.
It's all about who is watching when any of these things appears on ebay.

Keep an eye on ebay; Fillies regularly go for $40-$60. Sometimes there'll be a bidding frenzy and it'll go overboard, but I've seen decent ones go reasonably cheap.
I have a Spanish in-law who knows I'm into them and she keeps an eye out in second-hand shops for me. She got me an NOS still-in-the-plastic-wrappers "Sub Cero" 8/8 with translucent red scales. It was Lynn-sharp right out of the box and IMHO the thing kicks ass.
I do have one vintage #14 doble temple that I rescued from ebay that cleaned up very nicely. I am currently working on it; it's passing HHT with flying colors off the 4K, so I think it's going to be a beaut. The toe is a bit of a challenge but I'm getting there. I may decide to sell it – I love it but it's utterly superfluous given the others I've got like it. If I do, I'll let you know.
I kind of fell into the two ducks I have, the first a Wonderedge - it has some problems, scales are perfect, but the blade has definite pitting (just not on the cutting edge fortunately) - I paid too much for it, and will not realize what I have into it, but I wanted to try the vaunted Wonderedge - got to say it, big whoop. The blade is pretty thin, and the shave, even Lynn honed, was alright - but terribly memorable.
Now the beat up Goldedge (roundpoint) I picked up a flea for 1/5 of what I paid for the WE, now we are talking. Much heavier blade. I took that sucker home, MAAS'd the rats out of it, Dremeled the blade every so slightly to remove some discoloration, and in one of my first honing attempts, slapped that thing on a 4/8 and 12k, with a run at the pasted and shaved with it - and I have not looked back, it has remained shave sharp (used it this morning as a matter of fact) - for probably 20 shaves over a month and a half with just stropping. I haven't got another razor in my stable that has that kind of track record so far (which includes Henckels, Bengal, Wacker, Revisor, Dovo, Eigenbrod and a few good old Sheffields - the Friodur is real close, as is the Bengal and I have high hopes for a B Brummel from Ivo). The Goldedge isn't the prettiest I have, but damn it is a good shaver.
So that is my 2c.

I have about 15 DDs of various kinds and though there are fancier razors out there I know of no brand that seems to have so many razors that just seem to give consistantly fantastic shaves and that just seem to hone up very easily. I also have about 12 TIs and I have to say the DDs outshave them in general. If I compare my wonderedge to my TI Pierre T. Limited I prefer the TI but overall the DDs just shave consistantly better.
Another unique thing with the DD's is that with them because of the evolution of the company ie names and logos you can pretty much date most DDs pretty consistantly so you know how they fit into the company history. You can't do that with many other companies out there unless your a real hard core collector of a particular brand and even then its not easy.
You know that old saying where's there's smoke there's fire. If there is alot of collector interest in a particular brand there is usually a reason for that. Sometimes hype is involved but usually there is good reason. Does that mean DD's are the best shavers in the world? Probably not. You can sure do better price wise on Eboy and get just as good a shave. I have many razors that shave equally well. Like I say about my maestro, nothing shaves better that that razor however I have many that shave equally as well.
Interesting. I bought a DD Satinedge just like that one at a barber supply in 1977. It was my 2nd DD. First was a Dwarf. I sold it in '82 for $20 or $25. The guy at the barber supply told me that DD's were third level razors and that 2 other brands he carried were better; also more expensive. I won't say what the two brands were, as I don't want to see them start going through the roof on e-bay. I still have the Dwarf BTW; but it's not my favorite shaver. I'm not telling what is.

To be clear, I don't think ducks are overrated on SRP; here it seems they're respected and coveted in the same way that other razors known for great steel (Pumas, TI's) are respected. I was just asking about that extra "something" that drives their ebay prices through the roof. And there I think there are two things not mentioned in your post. One, Lynn uses a Wonderedge in that shaving video that shot around the 'net before he put out The Art of Straight Razor Shaving. That video is a cult classic and the wonderedge was Lynn's co-star. Two, Dubl Duck was very good at branding, what with their memorable engraved logo and variety of odd model names. Like Macintosh in the computer world.Quote:
