Default Hess Hair Milk No. 1 8/8

Here's on interesting auction that just ended for an 8/8 Hess Hair Milk No. 1. The razor looks a lot like a Dubl Duck Goldedge 8/8. Could they be from the same Solingen manufacturer (e.g., Dovo)?

Winning bid was for $291.78. There were numerous bidders in the $200s.

I'm surprised that it went that low. It is a very well known brand and an unusually large size. I'm still out of money though so how good of a deal it is is irrelevant. It looks pretty close to NOS.

    PS
I agree that the Hess razor all look like they were part of the Bresnick line along with the DD's

I looked at that, only shipped to the States, spectacular blade and did remind me of the Ducks as well, how could it not? Spike point, stunning looking razor, what's not to like.

I'm very surprised it went that low as well, but if you limit bidding to one country you're going to miss out on lots of international bidders I would think....

I agree that, relatively speaking, the Hess went for a low price. An non-mint Goldedge 8/8 recently went for $350 while a NOS 17/16 Goldedge went for $1099. Regardless, the Hess was still a little out of my price range.

Great razors and a good example of what brand recognition does.

If I were into big razors I'd have gladly bid more than the price is sold for.

Yeah, I had this one in my watchlist just to see what it went for at the end. I too thought it might go for a bit more, closer to $400, since it looks just like a DD Goldedge.

I remember a few years ago a seller on Ebay had a bunch of NOS Solingen straights they sold and among them were two of these Hess No. 1 razors, 8/8 in size but with round points, except tragically they had very active red rust right along the line where the blade sits in the scales, obviously a bad case of celluloid rot. It was a shame because otherwise the scales and the rest of the blade was mint condition. The other razors went for hundreds of dollars but those two sold for something fairly cheap. I always wondered if the buyers were able to salvage the blades or not...

That's one that passed me by If I would have seen that two weeks ago I would have been the highest winner bidder, beautiful razor I bet she sings a sweet note on the strop with a blade that thin and that's music to my ears.
