Tommyrazor on ebay

I just got a razor from him and wanted to share:

razor was described as no rust, super razor, no nicks in blade, super shape, to quote a few.

There is some rust on the top of the tang, and some spotting - which I would wager will need more than just a bit of MAAS. Definitely not super shape. Moreover, the blade has several nicks that I can see with my bare eyes :rant:

I did leave positive feedback for prompt shipment because the razor arrived fast, and the price I paid was good (but if I had paid what I think a super razor with nice edge is worth I obviously would not be too happy).

So just sharing with the other buyers - next time I buy something from him, if I do at all (because he does have some interesting razors) I will be asking specific questions upfront

I recently had a similar experience. I bought a Henckels, which he described as "great condition LIKE NEW . . . no damage or rust." It shows essentially no signs of prior use, but it had several rust spots, particularly near the hinge pin. The edge looks good and most of the rust spots polished off with MAAS, but the razor was not as described.

I left no feedback for him. I would have left negative feedback, but, like you, I wanted to keep the razor and I didn't think it was right to leave negative feedback without giving the seller a chance to provide a refund.

Tommyrazor does have some interesting pieces and some members here have had good experiences with him. However, I have found that he is poor at appraising the condition of his razors and reporting them (I'll give him the benefit of the doubt that he does not have the knowledge, and is not being dishonest). But the same advice applies. Look closely at the picture and request more, close ups.
I'm not sure if asking specific questions will help you all that much. I once asked about a item he had and his response was (basically) read the decription...no damage to the blade (a nick isn't damage, eh?)

Well, then he might be deserving some neutral feedback - not negative (at least not at first) but just pointing out that people who use these things have a need to know better...

After several of these, he'd learn, I think... He should know better, he is selling so many of them. He actually was nice to me - waiting to ship as I was bidding on more than one... but this doesn't change the questionable description

To me the dead "giveaway" of tommyrazor's slightly questionable practice are the "accidentally on purpose" out-of-focus, and murky dark photos of his razors....

Like he's an amateur photographer, and he just inherited this razor from his recently deceased grandfather... I love that story... he must have posted that "fish story" 90 times already!

Yeah right! ALL his photos are dark, murky, and out of focus... that is no accident!

You'd think that a guy with so much eBay experience could finally learn how to take well lit, focused "sharp" accurate, photos of his product....

Dark, murky, bad lighting = damage, cracks, blemishes, rust, and pitting, on blade and scales etc...

Out-of-focus = nicks, chips, cracks, and worse on blade and scales!

Picture at weird angle, or too far away = un-even blade wear!

No pix of Razor fully open = nicks, chips, cracks, blemishes, rust, pitting and worse, on blade!

No pix pf Razor fully closed = shrunken scales, cant' close razor!

CAVEAT EMPTOR!!!

I've had pretty good buisness with the guy. He is amazingly quick shipping out the razors. My major gripe, is that his starting bids are sometimes a little high...but that is more my problem than his. Since, he is usually close to the cost of the razor right off the bat, it often leaves me with little room for a great deal.

I realised early on that his assessment of the razors was a little off, and that I would have to go from what I could see in the pictures (at least you can make the images larger). What I get from his description is basically, is the blade or scales cracked? You'll have to ask about the width of the blade and other details.... Since most of his blades ARE older (1800's) I expect a little rust or marking, but since I enjoy restoration, this is not a big problem.

BUT, with all of that said, I can understand how his sales can be frustrating, if you are looking for a razor that you might just have to hone and be done with it. You do not want the extra work of cleaning or repairing.

That's pretty much my experience with him....

I guess, I'm hoping you guys stop biddin' on his older blades...more for me! :D

So far i have bought 5 razors from him. 2 are in my someday (i'll have time to restore these) box. They were low priced the other 3 had cost considerably more and i got pretty much what i paid for.
but yes the better the pics and the more of them the better the condition of the razor.
he shipps quickly and so far i have not felt the need to try his customer service. the two that needed the most work were my fault i should have inspected the pics better... but they are salvagable.

Well, I just measured the razor - it was sold as 1" W&B, I saw it's a faux frameback, which isn't that common and I wanted it mostly because of this particular combination.

Turns out the razor is not 1" - it's 15/16. I think the difference between say 13/16 and 7/8 is not as critical as when you get into 1" territory, as there is a premium just for this 1"

Combined with light pitting (which I thought was spotting...) - I guess I have to be really careful if I decide I want something else from him

I wish all sellers adhered to the SRP standards of advertising. It can be frustrating sometimes. Too bad you had to go through this Ivo.

Ah, Ilija - thanks for the concern but honestly I almost don't care about it. Just sharing for the benefit of others (and to help Chris get better deals from Tommy :roflmao )

I guess that's the benefit of having more razors than you think you need - easy to get over these disappointments
