Might be better placed in the Hones forum but i was linking an auction i just seen, so i thought best to put it here.
Just browsing at the bay and i saw this,

It looks very perdy and i dont know what it is, looks to be slate of some kind.
Just thought i would drop it in here incase its something someone had been looking for, love the "charnley forest? listing hehehehe

I have no interest in buying it, i have placed the listing in the auction forum if anyone was.
Im not a Geologist by any stretch of the imagination, but it is obviously a mis-labled item.
Anyone know what it is? kinda looks like Slate of some type with a vein of something running through it.
Its very attractive whatever it is.
Think its a Purple Yellow lake slate, they sometimes appear with green round or squared dots...
I have never actually seen one of those, just having a look on google, they certainly seem have a bit of cloudy look about them when wet.
There is two threads on this same hone. The other has been responded to by a serious hone collector who has indicated it is most likely a yellow lake.
Thanks for the info RezDog, wasnt aware of the other threads, just found it to be a very charming hone.
I would not mix known names with any slate available. I think more approopriate name is purple slate.Quote:

it looks like slate. Slate is found with banding on it and with irregular striae. The way the stone was cut accentuates the pattern.
Great Purple Slate....they are nice ones ;-) ok other way around its not a Charnley if this helps in any way.....

For shure its impossible to determine where they are from, especially without any lable....but i like to name my as a "Yellow Lake" Stone, because the origin of mine f.ex. was UK and they work in ranges like "labelled" stones do...so i prefer to call them as is....
Would be lousy annoying to say i have 10 nice slates laying around, one is red the other black the third gray....

I would like to make a comparison to the La Lune Stones, this is a trade name from FGBC (comparable to the Salmens Topic). We still do not know where the stones have been quarried and if we have several different quarries...if i find a comparable one i would name it a La Lune and not "a french hard ultra fine slate with sometimes green inclusions"....this on the basis of available indicators like sawmarks, coloration, surface structure, honing properties, etc.. If we are lucky you get one with a stamp, then its easy....
As far as i have checked SRP there have been Welsh Slate Stones packed as Salmens Stones in a purple color, as a reference your comment here

So can you agree that the correct term for these stones is "A welsh Purple fine slate, sometimes with green inclusions" ? Wherever they have their origin in thinking of a quarry....
I really like to create a discusion on this, because it makes sense to do so....if we get a common understanding on this i would appreciate it for sure....

That was kind of my thinking after i saw it too doorsch, simply to gain some knowledge for myself and create a discussion. Regarding the discussion on the fact it was labelled as CF? may be questionable practice to get views on an auction or it may be lack of knowledge on the part of the seller, either way, i doubt anyone actually scouring the auction sites for natural hones to buy or bid on would would even look twice and think is it? isn't it? simply, that's an interesting nat.
