Please DON'T buy this razor

I'd like to ask you, the members of this fine site to aid me indirectly.
I really like this razor. No. I love this razor and i really would like to have it.
So i figured that it's a better chance to just ask you guys for help instead of just hoping that no one is gonna bid at the last minute.

I do not have a lot of money so the price at the moment + postage is ok for me ( maybe i could do a little more if i have to but i'd rather not) so PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE don't bid on it.

All yours AFAIC. There is some pitting, it appears, on and near the edge. Could be troublesome to find clean metal to get a good edge...

Interesting, this is a razor made in the Netherlands. Never seen one before. Due to rust you won't be able to clean the blade well without losing most or all of the etching.

Good luck, but we're not the only people who bid on razors on ebay, so there could always be others who can outbid you if they are willing to pay more than you.
That's just how it is, but you should stick to your budget, there will be more razors and eventually you'll get one at your desired price. You may also have more money later.

You should improve your bidding strategy as well. Placing one low bid early on can be quite useful, but you should place the maximum you are willing to pay in the last 5-10 seconds before the auction closes.

I am definitely not advertising the add. As I said in the first post - I just thought it would be more comforting for me if I asked u guys not to outbid me than just hoping that u won't. I see that some of u don't like the razor. Maybe u r right. But to be honest I've seen pictures of razors in way worse condition and some of you still managed to get them in usable condition. I'm hoping that if no one outbid me I'll manage to fix whatever is wrong with it and use it.
Sure I'd love to get myself a brand new Dovo that has been honed by a master of the trade but that's not happening.

I'd place a max bid in the closing seconds and let it ride. Always a thrill when you win. If not, someone else wanted it more. No biggie. There will always be more.

I'm tempted to bid on it just because I think your being silly. It looks a little frowny with some chips in the edge so I'll pass on this one. Don't let yourself get too wrapped up in and emotional about a purchase, there will always be another equally charming razor to claim your attention, always.

The razor does look a little messy but all of you keep mentioning one thing makeing it worth at least something. The fact that no one has seen a razor from the Netherlands. I like it because it says bulldog an I own two AB's (American Bulldogs) but I will stay away because you asked sir!

There were a few razors manufactured in the Netherlands, Bastet comes to mind. I have one of the later ones, a very nice shaver.
gribbo, sometimes it is better to spend a bit more and save yourself a lot of grief, probably not one to learn on going by photos.

I've seen posts such as the OP in the past. I've always responded that all is fair in ebay and razors. I'd outbid my own mother, with a snipe ! ........ if I really wanted the razor. The last thing I would do is call attention to whatever the obscure object of desire was.

Your better off getting a low cost used razor from the classifieds here than taking a chance on a razor before you even know how to shave with one , plus you more than likely won't be able to achieve a shave ready condition on it , learn to shave with one that is ready before going off on a waste of time , But then again waste your money if you want, but then again you said you didn't want to spend a lot, so take the advise or don't , but you can get a better one ready to go for less than your going to have in it, stones ,, sandpaper polishing materials , and not knowing a good razor from bad will have you spending more. ,, good luck. Maybe It was my fault and i didn't make it clear enough. It's not that i am not willing to spend good money on a fine shave ready razor from the classifieds. Simply I am not able to do so.
1usd is equal to 1.75 bgn (our currency) and the cheapest razor i see in classifieds is a JR Torrey 9/16 quarter hollow for 60usd which is like 105 bgn plus another 35usd for shipping that's like 166.25 bgn. I just got my monthly payment and it was 643 bgn. So do you see my point now?
I'd like to point out that I am not complaining or something. I DO appreciate all of your advices and experienced view point and i am thankful for all of your replies but i simply can not spare that much money at this point.
I'm really starting to regret making this post couse i have the feeling that i made a fool of myself. :(

Don't regret it. I totally understand there are a few razors I've seen posted here that I lost the bidding for.

The one thing I will say, because it's worth repeating, is don't use it to learn on.

If you're patient there are occasionally cheaper straights (+/- $40 usd) in the srp classifieds. Depending on where you are there may be a way to keep shipping costs down.

Dont regret posting and don't let it run you off from the forum. This is a good place and usually fun so take everything on here with a grain of salt. I think sometimes folks forget that its not a real cheap hobby. Were are you located? Sorry if I missed that already.

Nah. It won't chase me away from forums. I like it here - so much knowledge. But as I said before - due to different countries economics $100 have different values.

Are there any antique shops or op shops near by? Maybe try asking around local or talk to a barber.

Having just done the exact same thing your considering I can confirm what the other members have told you restoring an old razor is not a cheaper option,

Hones will be in the region of $150 wet and dry around $30 if you don't own some $10 for pins and $10 for metal polish add in around 10hrs of labour and the purchase price of the razor and a shiny new dovo already honed looks like a bargain.

You could try a whipped dog razor if your on a really tight budget or maybe slowly restore it, restoration is for the love not for a saving.

Actually everyone is trying to save you money, it's not cheaper doing what your planing, but you must learn this on your own , I wish you the best of luck , or just wait till you have saved some more, no need to spend money you don't have on a straight , if your really wanting to spend less find a used DE and some cheap blades , that won't set you back too much. Tc

I guess you are right. I'll wait and save some money. Until then I'll use my Numax Special and the Solingen I have.

Well, it went cheap(ish)....But was it really worth the heads-up and all the fuss ?
