i bought a tobacco pipe on ebay. It was an auction and was the sole bidder. I think one reason was that the guy was charging $13.00 for 'standard' shipping. So I knew that going in. He shipped it in a priority flat rate box (free to him) and I received it within a few days. Great pipe. Love it, but I'm miffed that he charged more than double for the shipping.
If you were in my position would you leave a negative, a neutral, or nothing at all ? :thinking:
I had that happened to me once. I contacted the seller, he ignored, so I hooked him up with Neutral. Like in your case the item was as described.
Nothing at all. Jimmy you knew what the shipping was before you bought it, so he really doesn't deserve a negative. It ticks me off about that too, because he charged you way more than it cost him, but as I said you knew it going in. Tc
Was it packed securely and did the pipe meet your expectations? I might sent him a private message to him on eBay and share your concern but I wouldn't give him a neutral or negative. BTW...pics of the pipe? I owned a slew of them years ago but gave them up. They are lovely objects and I miss my Frog Morton and GBD's clad in sterling on the stem.
The only reason I suggested Neutral rating was because I have over 700+ transactions on eBay and as a seller I have always refunded the difference, if they were one. So I have no sympathy for people that overcharge and pockets the difference.
That's pretty steep for shipping unless he had to drive a 60 mile round trip to a post office or something. I probably would leave a neutral rating. When I sell I usually charge almost the exact amount or eat a bit of the cost.
People do this as a way to avoid paying ebay fees. They pay a fee for the bid price but not on the shipping price. It is sleazy.
As long as they are up front about it I wouldn't do anything different. I'd leave positive and just send him a PM telling him what I think about his shipping.

Unless I'm badly mistaken ebay began including shipping with the price of the item when charging final value fees :shrug: Allegedly to discourage gouging on shipping. Seems along with them doubling fees this was just greed on their part. Only game in town.Quote:

I was looking at a nice razor the other day and WAS going bid on it when I saw he was charging $9.00 for shipping! I did NOT bid on it. I have never had a problem with folks using those $2.50 brown envelopes not one broken razor yet. I have even quit bidding on those that charge the priority box rate of $6.80.

If he got it there, as-advertised and fairly quickly, you have no complaint? Buy the other one.....
A bit of gift to them is fine by me. A Priority box is what...7 bucks now? 6 buxs.

It would depend, if the handle was broke It would not be a deal breaker, I have learned how to replace broken handles. If the blade was broken I would mention it to the seller and NOT expect any kind of refund, but if the seller offers one I would take a partial refund. If it was an razor I really liked I might think about offering to pay for a priority box. But as I have said before I rarely pay more than $ 30.00 for a razor. I just bought a rare C. Klauberg & Bros "Damescene" 5/8ths razor for around $25.00 I have a in very good to excellent box that needed a razor for it. That's the only reason I bought the razor.Quote:

If I were in your position I'd be laughing all the way to the bank. I normally have to pay between $30-$50 US on shipping and it takes weeks, sometimes over a month to arrive.
I'd give positive feedback, cause they did what they said, and the item arrived in one piece. However, if they refunded the difference in shipping after I'd already paid them, well I never forget those guys, and use and recommend them as much as I can.
I have seen some of these where they charge a high price for shipping - and in that case I pass on the item. I have on rare occasions paid what I thought was an excessive amount on something that I really wanted. In that case I gave them a positive because they had listed the shipping cost and after all I put in a bid.
When I see an item with a high shipping cost, no matter how bad I want it, I pass, regardless what online store. Since you knew the exact shipping charge, it arrived promptly, you should leave your feedback based on the item and shopping experience only.
I'm not so sure they DID double the price on shipping. Was it a small flat rate box? because most pipes I have seen would not fit well in a small box (room for padding, no?)
The next size up box is not much less than that 13. If it was not a flat rate, it might very well have cost close to that 13. Around here, its not safe to leave packages for pick up at the mail box. So its a drive to the post office. Which is about 12 miles away. a few bucks for my gas doesnt seem out of place.
I would leave a positive, just because you knew what you were paying for before you agreed to buy. And yes, Ebay DOES charge based on price plus shipping!
It was a small flat rate box free at the post office, and he did an electronic label so he probably got a small discount on the shipping. I left a positive feedback with all 5 stars today.

I ship all my razors via Priority 2-day small box. Standard rate is $6.80. This is my normal shipping price listed in auction. I get a slight discount of the $6.80 via print-your-own label & postage. With that box however, insurance is limited to $50. Since most razors I sell exceed this amount, I tend to cover the additional insurance out of my own pocket ($2-3); peace-of-mind is worth the cost.
