Ever gone overboard?

I'm going to own up here:

After weeks of unsuccessful attempts to procure a "bargain" on ebay, I finally got sick of being sniped in the last 2 seconds of an auction. Really, really sick of it :rant:

So, I picked out a likely looking blade, and put a ridiculously large "maximum bid" on it (can you see where this is going...?).

Long story short, I'm now the proud owner of a 13/16 "near mint" JR hollow at the bargain price of 113USD (plus P&H).

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad I won. But I seem to have defeated my purpose of bidding on ebay in the first place...:shrug:

On the bright side, I may just have set a new record for JR hollows on ebay :w

On the down side, I've just let eveyone know I'm the shmuck who drove up ebay prices for Joseph Rodgers blades :eek:

Ohhh man, that's... ouch. I watched a bunch glide very quickly out of my grasp this weekend, but I did manage to snag one for only slightly more than I meant for it to go, but... 113 dollars...

It got bumped all the way up to that? Or did you just set a hard bid at 113?

Of course no price is too dear for a lovely razor :w

No, it got bumped up to that - I did have it for about 65USD with about 5 seconds to go...:(

Wow someone snipe-bumped it nearly 60 bucks, I bet he was doing the exact same thing you were, way over-shooting it to make sure he outlasted your set price...

Bet his eyes were popping out when he saw someone valued it higher than his super-high bid, haha :eek:

Yeah. I'd been watching other JR auctions from a seller called tommyrazor - some nice, interesting blades - and they all sat at low-ish prices until the final 3 seconds then BAMM! Up they went as the snipers came out.

So, I figured out the only way to win one was to set a really, really, really high max. bid. Worked - a bit too well.

Oh well - live and learn. Just have to hide the credit card bill from the wife (hey - I like a peaceful life...)

Been there and done that. I've over-paid on an NOS Revisor and a Friodur. You just get sick of losing sometimes and before you know it....:cry:

People sure do like to shell out for those big 6/8, 8/8 and bigger 'Celebrated...' wedges from Wade & Butcher, and tommyrazor had a few up.

I got a Joseph Smith and Sons, Sheffield with an interesting engraving, but I would rather have gotten one of those W&B's I think.

I don't think I even saw the Joseph Rodgers you ended up winning, tommyrazor's got so so so many razors up, lol.

I luckily didn't go overboard yesterday, but I was prepared to be that overpaying sucker. Luckily, the last few minutes were quiet. I got my Wusthof and did a dance of joy. I didn't need my high high max bid.

So much so that I'm thinking of using the balance of the paypal warchest to order another razor...lol.

Ha yeah I saw that one, went :eek: at the price, and made myself hit 'back' so I wouldn't be tempted.

I actually want one that's a bit used, bit beat up with some character, so I can clean it up and not feel like I'm desecrating a 160 year old pristine condition heirloom.

I want one with blood on it! lol hmm... where's the smiley for 'maniacal grin' ?

Thanks! I was VERY happy with that score. It's my second NOS razor. The first was a Gong Cutlery 6/8" and it's been great.

RAD is a sad sad thing. Although...I'm selling off most of my DE stuff so really, it's working out well. As long as there are roughly equal numbers of packages going out that are coming in, things are good. :D

Ok dodged some bullets, and managed to pick up a total of three good looking blades from tommyrazor.

I confess I snipe, but I just don't see another way to do it most of the time, I've never had a long bid go through, not that I'm the most experienced at eBay. I've purchased my fair share though.

Still though, all three are less than that one JR you got :roflmao

Yeah, but mine are a little cheaper. :rolleyes: I just can't stop buying them, though. My RAD is definitely overboard.

I do love those tommyrazor blades, too. I managed to score a W&B "Diamond Edge" 7/8 from him not too long ago.

I set a high price for the recent pair of Buffalo horn TIs. Went to bed thinking "What have I done? I'm looking for a good starter razor, not a cream de la cream UBER razor!" (not the right place to start I KNOW but they looked SO NICE!)

I was pretty relieved when I got up the next day to find I'd lost that auction! (apologies to whoever wound up snagging it if I cost you some $). They still seemed like a good deal - just not a GREAT deal.

Recovered my sanity and bought one of Vintage's 5/8 honed for a much more reasonable price and an IRS strop.

Now, back to Lynn's DVD to see how to use this beastie..... Wish me luck!

Brian I think in your case, there's a certain intoxicating delight in finally taking all that squeaked away moulah, all the little bits that you put in, and then cracking the chest open and doing a little rape and pillage on the unsuspecting eBay sellers.

Why is it so satisfying to spend good hard earned money on something you truly desire and can afford. Or, perhaps more especially, when you cannot afford it, haha.

I dunno, but I know I'm waiting to get paid so I can buy more soap :roflmao

Well...I don't think I'm going to war now. There's already a significant pissing contest between a couple bidders on the object of my desires. I'll still be watching for a well positioned snipe, but I don't think my plan will come to fruition.

Now...I have the warchest eating away at me... speeeend.. SPEENNNND.... between that and seeing the post on the Robert Williams razor...I'm getting all twitchy. Then there's always that Dovo stainless mother of pearl... but I dont' really need another 5/8 razor.

That's it. I'm going to the 7-11 for a Thorazine big gulp.

Well I think if I had the bones, I'd be aiming at some of the stuff on www.shavingshop.com all those redone old blanks, super scales, absolutely huge sizes... yeah I'd be in trouble.

Although just waiting and watching the buy/sell/trade here is nearly as enticing...

Oh yeah - I did the shavingshop last year. Got a beautiful 8/8 Friodur with Sambar stag scales (thanks Papabull!). That's one of the reasons I tried ebay - thought I might get a nice blade at a bargain price. Oh well - some of us are destined to be "store shoppers" no matter where we buy from.

I've gone overboard a few times. Once when I was starting out and didn't know value of razors. I was attracted to this one that looked nice and shiny with goldwash on the blade. I think I overbid on it in retrospect. I'm not sure if I did though, and try to rationalize that I didn't: I paid almost $70 for a KAMA in great condition- I've seen it offered later on Vintage Blades for $110 (NOS), but I've also seen pretty good examples go on ebay for $30. Mine was in very good condition with almost no hone wear.

I also wanted an old-style friodur for a while, and kept getting outbid. I finally got one, but paid $110 for it. :eek: It too was much less in the last hour, like $85 I think, until someone tried to snipe it for $109, but I had a higher max bid in just because I was tired of losing. I've seen examples of the quality I got go for $65 or so.

Other than that I'm preeeetty happy with my purchases. I'd love to get an Escher, but I can't afford to compete with the $200-$250 price tags they are going for.
