Lots of work coming my way

Jut got home and discovered that the bid I placed actually won this auction:

VINTAGE STRAIGHT RAZOR LOT TALLY HO SHEFFIELD REYNOLDS - eBay (item 220431498330 end time Jun-14-09 09:45:03 PDT)

None of the razors are in good condition, but I'm glad to finally own a Tally-Ho, even if it needs work, and the Joseph Elliott looks like a nice, hefty wedge which is another item I've been looking for. The others are all just a bonus to me.

The seller also had a lot of hones that I didn't win. Most were useless to me, but one two-tone item caught my eye. Here's a link:

Was that hone worth the final price? My first thought was a coticule combo, but the colors looked wrong so I didn't bid as high.

You're not kidding yourself. There's plenty of work there! With the really rusty stuff, if the pitting's not so bad they may well clean up fine.
With the hones, i'm fairly confident that is a natural Coticule/BBW combi. Not sure on the others though. I think the final price was worth the gamble for the winner.

I didn't get them either. Wish I had, but I couldn't convince myself that the one good stone was a BBW/Coticule combo. Kicking myself for not bidding higher on that one.

I dont know of any, but I am no expert .. just rolling the dice ...

Nice job picking up that auction - once restored you'll have $150+ worth of blades.

Good luck with those. I hope they clean up well. IMO the one stone is a combo but smaller than I like to hone with.

I'm happy to see that the American Knife Company frameback isn't nearly as rusted out as the pictures show. LOTS of rust, but it appears to be mainly surface rust and (hopefully) very little pitting. I'll be able to find out more after I get home and can get my hands on some abrasives.

I've also been told that a friend has a stash of maple, oak and poplar that may already be cut into 1/8" widths, and that I can have my pick of the wood. Not sure about poplar, but the others sound promising. He said he also has some of the multicolored laminated "zebrawood" as well, though it's mainly for gunstocks and such and isn’t cut to size for scales.

I admit I’m leaning toward getting some black paper micarta and scaling them back up to look more traditional, though the black linen looks mighty nice as well. And it’s hard to beat the price and the fact that it’s stabilized and already cut to width.

Now that I’ve got a bunch of razors I need to see if I can start acquiring a decent set of hones. It seems I keep missing the deals when they crop up.

the tally-ho is nice too but i find most interesting the funky frameback :)

that certainly looks like a coticule, would've liked to know what the longer slate colored hone is but oh well...

By the way, any ideas on what kind of hone this might be? Just the speckling stopped me considering it a piece of an enameled tile.
