Well, I hope nobody else does, because I just bought them. :)
Thanks.
I've got plans for several of these, and plan on putting some more in the classifieds.
I'm glad you made this post, because at that price, they probably wouldn't have stayed up long.
Wow what an amazing find. Veedub, you MUST let us know how these turn out.. I imagine they didn't know what they were talking about when they said they were rubber -- I bet they are horn or bakelite or something
So interesting!
If it makes you feel any better, Lynn, I really did feel bad about snapping them up so quick. The feeling lasted almost as long as it took to type in my paypal password. :mace:
I really excited, and you can be sure I'll let you know. I suppose they 'could' be vulcanite (ultra hard black rubber) given their age, but they are more likely celluloid, bakelite or horn as you said. Given their apparant condition and age, it's hard to imagine the are celluloid, but we'll just have to wait and see.
Can you imagine if they are all polished black horn?
wow. nice grab.
i am very jealous. I am coveting your scales.
Save me Jesus/God/Allah/FSM/Chitula/Pink Unicorn/whatever
nice grab there you going to share with the rest :rofl2:
Actually, yes, I thought I would.
I can't really do anything until they arrive and I find out what they really are and what kind of condition they're in, but assuming their in good shape I have a barter lined up for a couple sets, and figured I'd put several in the classified for a cheap enough price that they wouldn't be out of reach for anybody.
I may even keep a few sets around to give away the next time somebody get's screwed by a poorly packaged razor.
Of course, if they're antique black horn in excellent condition.......:mace:
Great buy, very lucky, indeed.I would be interested in some of these when they go up.Just hope I will be online when they go up....
Total score. One of the scores of the year? I think they're horn. I hope I'm right.
The easiest way to tell since you'll have twenty pair, is to take a scale and snap it in half.
Chris L
why do all of you think it's horn?
Because being ove 100 years old, it's doubtful that celluloid would still be black and shiny. Also, I think there's a certain amount of wishful thinking.
Of course, even if they are just celluoid, that lot is probably worth 10 times what I paid. If it's antique horn, it's probably worth 30 or 40 times what I paid.
My new scales just arrived.
There are 24 sets of scales all together.
Definitely celluloid (which smells an awful lot like vulcanite when sanded) and they are in just as good of condition as I'd hoped. Absolutely perfectly glossy.
The only downside is that they would only work with a 4/8 or 5/8 blade. A 6/8 would not work.
They also have a wedge built in. There's half a wedge formed into each side of the scales.
Hmm would any be suitable for my 7 day wapi project :-) we were talking about these on the chat the other morning , sweet buy
cheers Garry
7 day wapi project eh? What size are the blades on those wapis?
From memory I think they're varied between 4/8 , 5/8 & 11/16 .. i've got a few ( sic:12 i think )
:-) when I started using them i thought those metal scales were the mutts , i'm now finding them heavy .. One day .... eventually they'll all be rescaled
talk to you on the chat soon do doubt ,
cheers for now Garry
Same description, same photos but from May...

I been watching it then, but desided to skip on it..
Not a big shock. They said right in the ad that they had picked up several of them, but the add was for one that was still tied shut, and not cut open like the one in the photos.
