Wow ! I got all hot and bothered until I saw the opening bid. :dropjaw:
If I were spending a thousand dollars on an antique, I'd want a little more assurance than, ~"AFAIK, this piece is original".
Going by the shape of the stone, and the fact the holder has a belt hook, I would think that this is a scythe stone, and likely far too coarse to be of interest to most of us here, unless someone is really jonesing for a HAD fix.
Kindest regards,
Alex
Thats insane
Alex is right - its a scythe stone and its holder. The holder clips onto your belt and contains water, as the stone is used wet.
Regards,
Neil
I would go for it but I sharpen my scythe with a Devonshire oil stone . :roflmao
(running and ducking for cover) :D
Your name has just been added to my enemies list. Still no luck with that particular stone, everyone who said they might be able to help drew a blank. Apparently a hone from Tavistock is mentioned in The Petrology of Archaeological Artefacts but that's out of print, unfortunately. Came across a very old reference the other day that mentioned two other hones from Devonshire, one is a hone-stone coming from Barnstaple, and there was also a Lydian Stone found in Devon that has a history of use as a hone. If I could find either of these it would be a sort of compensation prize.
Kindest regards,
Alex
well my scythe stone is a Belgium blue but i have seen old men who also use a coticule... of course they really can mow i just cut where most people use a weed -eater...
