Lesson learned...again!.....

Well...the package arrived today.

eBay - New & used electronics, cars, apparel, collectibles, sporting goods & more at low prices

I had speculated that this was a Coticule, natural on both sides. I was correct plus it was quarried on the seam. Nice big stone.

Then I looked closely...and....it has a crack! that runs the full length of the stone!:rant:

Hmmmm...now what do I do? So I reviewed what questions I had sent to the seller.....ah nuts!... I did not ask the seller any questions!

So, shame on me for forgetting the basics...... and shame on the seller for not disclosing the crack in the stone either in writing or by photograph.

BTW, the stone is still usable and since the crack runs along one side I could just cut the stone down by 1/2" and all would be well.

So, I left a Positive feedback but left the comment...
"I really liked that crack on the stone"

Guys...am I off base on doing this? Let me know please.

Randy, tell you the truth I don't fault the seller for not disclosing the crack. If he is an average person he probably wouldn't take note of it being clueless about stones. He does offer a 7 day money back guarantee so if you aren't happy with the stone all you'll be out is the shipping. OTOH, if the crack doesn't effect .....(or should it be affect ?) the honing I wouldn't cut it. Just IMHO.

Yea Jimmy's right. Whatever we buy on Eboy we tend to assume the seller is knowledgeable about the product and will know what a defect is and disclose it. I know guys who sell things, whatever they can get hold of and know squat. They just put it out there so it's up to the prospective buyer to ask all the right questions since we know what we need.

Just get your money back if that's what you want to do.

Thanks guys, I went to Ebay and they only allow an additional comment, no retractions/modifications on a positive feedback. So I ate some crow and apologized.

From vast experiance Crow is usually best eaten when baked in a pie... :)

In answer to your question...... for some odd reason I went on a hone buying jag this past month. Bought a Charnley Forest, a Salmen, this Coticule (simply because I thought it might be a Deep Rock ( it is not)), and a Dragons Tongue ( which has yet to be delivered). Oh, and a few barber hones from the Gun shows and antique fairs ( and a few razors of course).

I guess I disagree with most on this issue. Regardless of knowledge, a crack is something that should be disclosed.

I'll give another example. A few months ago I made one of my few ebay purchases. I paid $162 for a lot of six razors that included a 8/8 W&B For Barbers Use. The other blades were crap but a couple scales were good, including a pristine set of Red Imp scales. Now, I would not have bid that much except for those scales and the fact that the seller specifically described the W&B as having a blade in good condition. That was true except for the half inch crack in the middle of the blade.

The seller made the same argument--he wasn't a razor expert, but you don't need expertise to note a crack in a blade and call it in good condition.

The seller and I argued back and forth and, though he finally agreed to a refund, his level of vitriol made it pretty clear to me I wasn't getting my money back. Now I've got some very expensive scales.

In Randy's case, the seller described a chip, so the crack should have also been mentioned. Failure to mention it or show it in my mind is deceptive and merited a neg feedback. People seem to be so loathe to give negative yet honest ratings that I've given up on ebay feedback because I no longer trust it any more than I trust ebay sellers.
