In need of advice.....

Gents,

Discovered THIS one on the Bay:

W. GREAVES 13/16 STRAIGHT RAZOR BLADE w/ box VINTAGE - eBay (item 230509672952 end time Aug-16-10 08:49:06 PDT)

Needless to say that i am interested in this blade, but since i've already have made ONE mistake in purchasing a razor that had so much honewear that there's nothing that can be done about it..well.........i don't want to make THAT mistake again. :banghead:

Therefore i seek advice of the "seasoned" pro's on the forum.
Already contacted the seller, and he stated: " I had to Google honewear to learn a little. I don't know how to judge honewear. There is some..."

HOW can you be sure that there is actually enough left on the spine, in other words "little honewear"??

I would recommend following the advice to stay away from eBay until you have enough experience to know what to look for.The SRP Classifieds are a much better bet for new people. Good luck!

REALLY need to pay attention when looking at the DVD made by Mr. Abrams. Should have seen THAT as well :banghead:

Most people can judge wear on the spine by the photos, although sellers sometimes try to hide the wear by the angle of photo, focus and lighting. Bottom line is that if I can't tell exactly how worn the blade is in the photos, I don't bid.

Jeez,that one looks pretty good to me. Would you re-scale it yourself or send it out?

Greaves is really a nice razor and this one looks really great. Not only that, you don't see them too often, either.

At this point in the game, price is everything. You've got a little over a day on the auction, 4 bidders, and it's sitting there at about $26.00 or so. Of course you'd like to have it at this price, but you know it's going to go for more than that. You must ask yourself, "what am I willing to pay for this?"

I use a software program called "Bidnapper" when placing my bids. There are others out there you can use; I like this one. I loose most of my bids, because I determine beforehand the absolute top dollar I will pay, and I just let Bidnapper place the bid the last few seconds of the auction. I will not allow myself to bid emotionally. You will spend way too much money when bidding this way.

In regard to this particular razor I would guess it's gonna go off somewhere between $50.00 and $100.00, maybe more - who knows. I like this razor, plus Greaves has an excellent reputation. I would probably put in a top bid of $80.00. That is me, though - and that is an emotional bid for me because I have been wanting to pick up a Greaves. Some of us are suckers for certain brands. I have a passion for Fredrick Reynolds' razors, too. This is why I use Bidnapper because I will get crazy when bidding......

I use the same sniper program and use it the same way you do.To me it works wonders.Set it and forget it.Then if you win,it's a surprise.It's amazing sometimes, I've set a pretty high snipe, then won for less than half of it.

Geeez, how lucky are you guys, you get that much info. I'm afraid here in Australia we are lucky to get one blurred pic most of the time, and believe me, the seller usually knows two parts of bugger all about a straight razor!:boohoo:

And I got out bid on the thing,,,oh well.:beer2:

Well, it went for $76.01.
