Not that I'm complaining but it doesn't make any sense.
Le Grelot - Straight Razor | eBay
It sold for $170 and it wasn't a big blade nor was it shave ready. Any ideas why?.Attachment 103596

For one John your Ebay rep is steller (Your on my sellers list) at least two people wanted that particular blade.
I quit trying to figure out the whys and werefors of the bay yrs ago:) congrats
You didn't describe it as a "Monster Chopper" did you?
French is big now a days. As long as there is something that looks French on the blade it sells high even if it's 'La Merde'!
That is the postive thing about listing as
a no reserve auction.
the guy who willing to pay the must
gets the item.
I recognize that razor, that particular piece was custom made in collaboration by Pierre Thiers and Monsieur Grolet in 1899. It has been appraised at $30,000. Don't spend it all in one place ....
My best guess is because of the name Le Grelot, nothing more nothing less....
Funny..I pm'd a guy about Eski framebacks a few months ago..his response" they are hot now" and just about everyone wants one.."meh" I thought to myself..I always wanted a Le Grelot as well.....seriously..saving up some moolah as well
Well its a Le Grelot in good condition, my guess its because its a full wedge.
I gave up trying to make sense of ebay pricing a long time ago. What's hot seems to change on a daily, sometimes hourly basis.
I've sold a few LeGrelots in the last few months and they've ranged from low $50 to around $120. Ive got one in the classifieds here at the moment for $98 that I reckon is much nicer than this one but no one seems interested. Perhaps I should just list it on ebay.
It must likely cause
ebay just gets alot of
people shopping for
nice treasures.
You did do a good job on
posting nice photos.
So i guess that gets people who are willing to bid higher.
cause they have a good idea of the condition.
Maybe more than one person assumed it was one of 'them old' quarter-hollow grinds, or they assumed it was NOS? That or just a bidding war.
Well, some dude in Italy scored a 7/8 restored Joseph Rodgers this weekend, for only 55$.
So the universe made up for your fluke by generating an opposite fluke.
Sadly, the razor that got affected was mine.
@#$%^#$%^#$^!!!
The guy who bought it is a multi millionaire and well known philanthropist. You were his charity case for the month.:)
I agree a great picture is worth... $170.00.
Seriously it's marketing... a good picture, can't tell you how many times I have passed on an item because of the picture. If the photo is of poor quality then the seller is hiding something or the seller cares so little about the quality of the photo it reflects on the item and the seller.
Actually, I am writing a book on marketing and creating demand, just this thing. First Impression... you only get one shot. Exposure creates demand - Demand drives value. Take good photos, take lots, that is your exposure on line.
Very true. If I don't see good, clear, well-focused pics of the blade in open and closed positions I won't even bid. It's not just the photos though - if the blurb is positive that's a good thing. I can't stand those auctions where they state "...I don't know anything about straight razors, but..."

Neil
It is a nice one. I have always been curious about the "Hospital" and the symbol reminds of a fishing bobber or a Christmas ornament.
Were these made for medical use and what IS the symbol etched on the tang?
I didn't realize that my current buying habits were causing a trend!
It's just 7 French razors that I bought in the last two weeks...
Hospital was the founders last name.

I usually bid high on the razors with crummy pictures, that are rusty, stained, etc., so long as i can make out a good deep makers stamp and its a wedge style blade. most everything can be buffed out on greaseless, and wedges allow for some pitting to be removed. I've won many a fine gem for a good price by taking the risk. However, you may occasionally find a blade with a hairline crack in it. In that case, if it wasn't stated in the description, or shown in the pictures, you can get a refund, or open a case and get a refund grudgingly...
Hello
As I live in france, I own many Le Grelot hospitalet (very good blade, but commun over here), but what makes the high price of this one, is that's a wedge type razor.

I have only see one other Le Grelot with a wedge type blade (it was in a collection of a friend).
I have a very large collection (more than 1000 razor of all type) and I don't own a Le Grelot wedge...
It's my explaination, but I could be wrong...
