Wow... That's ridiculous.
One thing for sure, it seems to cast a giant show too. Sorta reminds me of this :dropjaw: the way the blade drops way down from the spine.
Bob
hope the seller will enjoy a good meal with his wife for that price :dropjaw:
Makes me wonder why razors of this size were ever produced, because they cannot seriously be as as good as a top quality 5/8 or 6/8 when it comes to doing the job, because if they were then why are the vast majority of razor not made in these sizes? were they a marketing ploy of the day? I wonder, they look very impressive all the same.
Jamie
Perhaps I have an answer, I talked with an old barber here, he is 85 year old today but still shave peoples if they want.
He said to me that when he was in activity from 1947 to mid 60', barbers uses big size blades because they have up to 50 customers a day and so each day they like to lap their straight on a stone so it was better to start with a big blade otherwise they need a new one each week.
I sure love those big blades. I started with a 5/8 for my first cut and I rember the first thing I thought of once I put it down. Someone must be making bigger and better razors out there somewhere.. Used a 5/8 for a week tell my 8/8 came in the mail and never looked back 8/8 9/8 10/8 bigger the better for me. Not sure if its just me but holding biger steel in the hands just feels better ..
That would certainly make sense if the spine on the much lager razor was twice as thick as the 5/8 or 6/8 equivalent because lets say you lapped a 8/8 and a 6/8 everyday the hone wear on the spines of both would be exactly the same, and the angle of the bevel on both razors would eventually be so off, if as the Barber said they were lapping them everyday, but maybe they were using extremely fine Barbers hones this may take many years of lapping to see any real noticeable hone wear.
Jamie
They were Produced to be the finest shavers on the planet:)),my 10/8.love this sucker.

Wow when I saw it at lunch it was in the $170's, one day I will get one that big. Wasn't there a thread running about this razor already? I looked but could not find it.
Big razors especially the wedges were products of the 19th century when they didn't know about hollow grinds. Once they knew how to do those very few big razors were made or used.
Our romanticizing of big wedges is akin to folks who would like nothing else but to drive around in a 57 Chevy.
Of course nothing wrong with driving around in a vintage car or using big razors. it's a perspective thing.
Its not because the blade is big that it will take more honing then say a 6/8 razor, you cant wear it down to a 4/8 razor without having some majot re-grinding to the blade.
Like TBS mentioned barbers used many razors, their honing regiment was touching up the blade till the barbers supplies rep came to the shop when they exchange for a different razor, or had it hone by the rep as well.
I like big blades because it's the only chance I get to hold on to something large.
For some reason this price makes me sad....It's not even good looking.
I was watching this razor on the bay myself, I didn't think it would go for that much money! Glad I didn't even bother bidding..I would love to see it restored, maybe someone on here purchased it :)
Congrats to "the lucky winner"!
I hope he enjoys it.
All that blade needs is to be honed,If it can be honed.
The pro that Honed mine is one of the best of the best,He has honed 5 Rodgers 10/8s,Mine was the only one that took a perfect edge.
His his feeling that those huge thin blades do not tempor properly,Just what I was told.
I love this razor. You haters are just jealous. :p
Big congratulations to whomever the winner may be! If it ends up in a shadow box, be sure and use a 16d nail to hang it. :)
Mine, as I've pointed out in countless threads, was $50.00 USD on an ebay buy it now, from a local guy so I didn't have to pay shipping. :y
It had a chip I had to hone out and I lost a 1/16th of blade depth but it is still 10/8. Anyway, what Bill said about honing them. It was a tough job aside from the chip. The spine is slightly warped and that can be seen in the resulting unevenness of the bevel from one end to the other, and one side to the other. Great shaver though and at fifty bucks and a bit of elbow grease I ain't complaining. :p

Also got to love the box:) more like a small crate.
No criticism of the razor . Just thought the case was big enough to hide a body in it . ;)
I cant help but wonder if it gets reposted in a couple of days. I see some of them "sell" for high values only to come back around from the original seller.
P.S.
the razor still looks cool.
I wonder if I should post one of mine. I think I got my hands on a 10/8's W&B before quiting the business...lol Keep up the good work pixelfixed and JimmyHAD...LMAO
Cheetah
Ahhh I must sadly say after checking my previous posts I don't own a 10/8's. Only a bunch of measly 9/8's and some cheesy 8/8's. Sorry
Cheetah
You don't have a 10/8?? How'd they even let you register here? :p
James.
I miss this place sometimes.......LMAO and now that I know that there's purple peanut butter my interest has been peaked.
We have missed you as well Cheetah! That purple peanut butter is Greek blood! ;)
IF it makes you feel better, I have no 10/8 either! I don't miss what I never had, Brother! :)
