I don't see any attachment or embedded vid. Am I missing something?
its there now ha sorry
Your form looks good, but I suspect you're using too much pressure. It's always hard to tell from videos though. You should be using basically the weight of the razor alone, with only enough pressure to keep the razor contacting the strop.
What I always do is run the freshly stropped razor over my arm hair, and if it pops hair without touching skin it is good 9/10 times. I suppose it's a version of the dreaded HHT :)
Oh, and I typically do 20 laps on material, 60 on leather (for full hollow razors like your Dovo).
Seems to be ok, just take your time and don't roll the edge
alright thanks very much guys, for the record that wasnt a full stropping i did more before my shave which seemed to go well. I really need to order preshave oil new soap and aftershave milk though, plenty of dryness.
Everyone says you will dull your razor as you learn to strop. I took that as a challenge. Been a year and haven't done it yet.
:popcorn::popcorn:
Nice job on the video. Thank you for your service. How many times are you doing the leather side?
Looked good to me. As has been said before pressure would be your only concern. I also have a full hollow Dovo and it will tell you if you're using too much pressure while stropping. You'll hear it sing. If you do then lighten up.
i usually do about 25-30 on the poly web and then anywhere from 40 to 60 on the leather. there are a few small nicks on the leather but i really dont think its enough to affect anything

quick additional off topic question. How come my dovo ebony spike doesnt say "ebenholz" on it. I notice that some do and some dont, why not?
Apart from what's already been said, the only thing I'd add is to try flipping the blade more with your fingers and less by turning your wrist over. When I recorded myself stropping for the Stroptober thread (which I *highly* recommend checking out: http://straightrazorpalace.com/strop...st-2012-a.html ) I was surprised to see how much I was turning my wrist. When I addressed that, I found I had more control of the blade and the whole thing generally went better.
But otherwise I'd say you're doing fine. :tu
Strop like you were fondeling your wife or G.F,gentle but firm.
It looks fine to me, but possibly a little too much pressure on the canvas side; you appear to be going lighter on the leather. 30/70 is a good mix (30 canvas 70 leather) for me.
BTW, I note you adjusting the strop at its anchor point to ensure it's parallel to the ground, this is a good idea. How have you anchored it? I find a carabiner works well. Make sure you start off slow when new to stropping, going quickly will give no benefit (other than reduced time to strop) and may lead to more errors.
The strop itself looks fine.
My strop looks worse than that, and it still works fine.
This is my every day use strop, it's disgusting. Note the huge nick in the side. Echo's is perfect in comparison...

from the vid it looks like a heavier stroke back towards you. Also you are using your wrist to flip razor and not fingers. This vid shows awesome technique and helped me heaps 110103-193326.wmv - YouTube If you use abit of 2000w&d you can take those nicks out of the strop easy enough and will leave it smooth again. Good luck and enjoy
hey thanks for the advice everyone but carmaloschneider, i have it anchored to a door handle (closed of course) with paracord. I strop more quickly than most beginners as ive been a bit shaky since birth and the speed gives me more of a smooth even stroke,
I'm reading this as 'thanks for the advice, everyone [but] carlmaloschneider I have anchored it to a door handle..
Or shoud I read it as 'thanks for the advice, everyone but carlmaloschneider :-)
Anyway, paracord is really strong stuff, isn't it? The strop has a swivel anyway, doesn't it? The carabiner allows one to remove the strop really easily, of course.
I'm guessing you're not a sniper :-)
Good luck and be safe.
ha i meant your first interpretation, and no not a sniper ha intelligence. and the strop has a swivel with a clip that goes to a ring loop thats where the paracord is attached
nah i figured it out, if you read on the site they say that the razors just simply are not sold with the stickers anymore
This is what i attach mine to. I have it at a good height which is different than my door handle. My bathroom door doen't have a lock and i don't trust it not opening. Plus i supported a local blacksmith!

It seems as if you're doing a good job. How does it shave, that is the ultimate test? It appears that you're using a little pressure with the stropping hand and that is generally not advised...however if it works for you go for it. I use a little, just enough that I can feel the draw. However I do relax the strop a smidghen, especially when honing a wedge, it seems to work better for wedges. However, these are all finer points that you will develop on your own. Your doing a good job now, just remember to be non-tentative and confident and you'll do fine. Also remember to treat the strop several times a day using the oils of your palm, it really does break it in faster and increases the draw on the blade.Good Luck.
