Straight razor shaving and puppies don't mix well.

Being brand new to straight razor shaving, I'm learning many new things each and every day. Yesterday I was shaving with my beautiful new to me straight razor. My wife knew I was getting ready to shave because I had just gotten out of the shower and told her so. Anyways, I didn't close the door, and while running the razor effortlessly from the bottom of my ear towards my throat, our 12 week old black lab came running into the bathroom for me to play with him. After running in he jumped up and into my leg; it was at this moment that I took a nice dig into the side of my neck just as effortlessly as if I were cutting hair (as opposed to flesh). It bled for about 10 minutes; styptic pencil, toilet paper, direct pressure check and re-apply about 5 or 6 times. Anyways, though I thought my wife had the puppy and would keep him out of the bathroom, it's my fault and the lesson I learned is to always SHUT THE DOOR! Lucky for me the price I paid for that particular lesson was not as expensive as it really could have been.

I have 2 cats...

I have a 4 month old kitten who comes and lies on the bathroom floor right next against my feet. It's cute and I never step on him or get distracted. Sometimes he tries to jump on the counter, but when I see that happen, I just move the blade from my face.

I have three kids, a dog and a wife. I just use my ears to listen for any sounds of impending doom, and do as Laurens does, and remove the razor from my face before it strikes ;).

I keep the door shut when I am at home, despite shaving at all sorts of odd hours when all others are asleep or out. I am a bit jumpy though so I prefer to be cautious.
When I am away from home I leave the door open, but I nearly cut myself the other week when the door blew closed and the clothes hanging on it looked like a person in the mirror.

Yea, you really don't need distractions when shaving especially when starting out and you are a bit nervous anyway. Closing the door is a good idea at least it was for me too. Now it does not matter so much.

Cats wont be that dangerous i believe as dogs and kids!

Sorry to hear and glad it wasn't worse. I've got a 10 mo old pup and have already initiated "when I'm shaving he's waiting patiently on the other side of the door."

Yep, Wife, 3 kids, 3 dogs here. I lock that door and still try to get my shaves in by 6am lol

Ever since the youngest slammed himself into the closed, locked door (thinking it would open regardless of it being closed as 6 year olds do). I get my shaves in before the compound wakes :)

edhewitt, you never met my lil mama cat. Came to me of her own volition. Presented me with a beautiful litter of six. Still have her daughter, a half siamese with full lungs. The point is, this little cat, and her name is Lil Mama, has been the most loving and understanding cat I have ever had the grace of being responsible for. Six years ago, going through a long series of chemo, when ever I was feeling down or hurting, Lil Mama would find me, jump in my lap, lay on the area where the cancer had been and stay there purring until I felt better and then jumped off and went back to sleeping on my shoes.
It is now my privilege to see to her needs as she is now blind and has high blood pressure (yes cats have it too) and hold her when I see she is not feeling good at that moment.

But I will almost agree with you about dogs.

Razorfeld, I was just messing, though typically cats are quite self centred, I like your story, and hope you are all well now. Reciprocal kindness is very rewarding.

Yep. I keep the door closed and if I hear steps the blade is withdrawn to a safe and neutral position.

The Swiss Miss pretty much stays away while I shave. Puppies and kittens would be a real problem though.

Worse still....he might choose to do it himself! And he's smart enough to build it and launch if from here. He often tells me, "It ain't Rocket Surgery ya know!", and I just have to believe him, because he's just such a fart smeller...I mean smart feller :)...
