razor tugs on chin

Well, I've made it to my 4th shave with no blood and only moderate success. I'm using a dubl duck gold edge that i had professionally honed last Saturday. I strop after every shave with my homemade 3 inch strop with a denim fabric secondary. (20 passes on the denim and 50 on the leather). I've started trying the chin area and have noticed quite a bit of tugging. How do I know if the razor is dulling or if I have bad technique? I check the razors sharpness by hovering it over a hairy patch on my arm to see if it still pops hairs and it does. i have some CrOx that i bought for touch ups but i don't want to use it unnecessarily.

Is the razor still shaving well every where else? If it is I would guess that it is your technique and not the razor. Try to keep the edge of the razor at the same angle to the skin where it makes contact as in it needs to curve around your chin the same as your chin curves. I try to do short strokes on my chin and as I move down my chin I adjust the angle. I hope that this makes sense if not I will try again.

If the razor is not shaving well every where else it might be that the edge needs a little help. I have not used CrOx so I am no help at all there.

It took me a while to figure this out so don't be disappointed if it takes more practice.

More than likely it's not the razor. The chin seems to be the hardest for most to master and has the toughest hair on the face, you have all sorts of different contours you're trying to deal with. Just keep at it trying different angles and use small strokes...it'll fall in line for you eventually. Or just grow a goatee...lol.

From your description sounds like the razors sharp and your angles wrong. At 4 shaves it's unlikely to master the shave but practice makes for improvement

I shave the chin and the mustache areas in miniature, almost buffing, strokes with the razor almost flush on the face. Here and there the blade angle is adjusted a wee bit. Also, as a rule, and especially around these areas, I keep my lather slightly on the runny side for better glide. I have discovered that a thick and dense lather hinders the razor's glide, especially with a tough beard, because the blade has to fight not only the tough beard, but also the thick and dense lather.

If it shave everywhere else on your face without pulling then its likely your technique. You're only 4 shaves into a long and winding road. Watch your angles. Don't get too steep because of the contours. Approached the area from different directions. Try to isolate small areas at a time rather than the whole chin. Experiment with jaw bone positions that will change the contour slightly. You'll eventually find what works for you.
