A quick noob PSA. Woke up late this morning didn't have time for the throat cutter. DID go ahead and lather up with the brush. Made notable difference even with the cartridge razor!
And that fact I will use as the camel's nose for my friends that are still in Gilette world.
Absolutely. A couple of years ago my wife bought me a brush and some good cream. I used that with cartridges ever since. It helped make the shaves better. I finally got tired of paying to replace cartridges and started looking into a more lasting solution...which ultimately landed me here and finally using a straight for the past month.
Yep, has made a big difference in my shaves as well. I. Still using a cartridge but will be making the jump to straights soon!
Is all about water content and hydration,the canned stuff is nothing but propane and air with some soap added.
Before I pulled the trigger on my first straight, back in my Mach 3 days, I switched to a brush and soap and I'd say it improved a cartridge shave by at least 20%. And the upswing is that when I received my SR my lathering skills were somewhat proficient, which eliminated one variable right away.
As for using a brush and the canned goo, I've heard it works in a pinch but traditional soaps and creams are better for your skin in the long run.
No surprise there. If you applied all the things you do to make a straight shave a good shave to shaves with other razor types you would get an improvement there too. Most people grew up using the canned goo/cart combo and never learned how to wet shave properly.

My dad always used a Palmolive stick and brush for use with a disposable and this was how I started before going though who knows how many kinds of goop and oils etc trying to get a decent shave. Ironically now using the Palmolive stick and a brush again.:gaah:

I have Palmolive, godrej, musgo orange amber, C&E west Indian lime creams currently. I used to have mac root and fauldings.
I don't think the Palmolive underperforms at all. Fauldings smelled weird and I didn't find it that great, the maca root was really quite good. C&E has a great scent, but it's lather is only ok. The godrej is ok, and musgo is probably my current favourite.
My brother has an extremely light beard and, in his words, "absolutely no interest in cutting my face up with a straight razor". But, I did give him a brush and bowl for his birthday and he uses it regularly with his disposable cartridges. To each his own.
When I first considered abandoning the herd of cartridge shavers, I was told by someone that there is no single thing that offers a more significant shave experience improvement than a good quality bowl and brush cream. I am not certain if there is NO other more significant thing, but it dang sure made a huge, huge difference. I hope never to have to use canned lather again.
