I never imagined straight shaving would have so much to it or indeed that I'd be on an Internet forum discussing it.
Great wee community you have here. I've not even been on 24 hours yet and I've got so much advice and support.
And nobodies made me feel stupid, even though I do know very little
You MUST make your own lather with a cake, or cream and a brush. I would recommend proraso in the green tube as a starter. It is user friendly and makes a good lather. As far as soaps go, Tabac is a very easy to lather soap. Plus it has that vintage scent that says, "why yes I have a Members Only jacket". Once you've got your lather making skills honed up, give Mitchells Wool Fat a spin. It is my favorite. The Straight Razor Designs soaps are most excellent too.
Well, you have received a lot of good advice already, not much to add except you are in the right place to learn and eventually you will get to "Best shave ever"
10Pups hit it on the head when I went through a shave or two like yours.
-Overconfidence
-Shaving with cool water splashes
-Pressure awareness
-Angle awareness
-Patience to know when to stop or if finishing with a cartridge may be necessary.
Learning to "settle" on when my shave is good enough is coming with experience. If I ever want to challenge the notion, I can always reach for the next rung again and roll the dice. Sometimes snake-eyes.
I took a day off from shaving yesterday to give my face sone time to recover.
I shaved today and took all your advice on board, especially in reference to the pressure.
A marked improvement!
I only did the one pass as I didn't want to push my luck. But no bleeding or burning, so happy days.
Thanks a lot for all the advice guys
Congrats, looks like you are on the right track.
