I'm a recent convert to the art of straight razor shaving and started around 6 months ago after purchasing a new Dovo Inox 5/8" half-hollow ground Stainless steel razor. Over time I found that I could comfortably shave the sides of my face but couldn't go anywhere near my neck, top lip or chin areas without ripping myself to shreds.
During the past 6 months I've had the razor honed once. Sadly the quality of my shave didn't improve. I put it down to technique, and have been patiently persevering.
This week I treated myself to a beautiful Dovo Ebony Bismarck from Melanie at Razor Straight in New Zealand. My shave today was simply unbelievable! It was like I was shaving with a new blade. I was in fact shaving with a new blade of course, but do you remember when you used to shave with Gillette (or any other brand) cartridge razors and when they became blunt you needed to change them before your face was ripped off? And when you swapped the cartridge everything felt better again?
Well, today the difference in my shave was like night and day. I shaved my neck and had a decent attempt at my lip and chin - no skin transplants required! That's NEVER happened before.
I don't know why there is such a difference between my two straight razors. All I know is that there is.
I feel like a new man, and to have finally shaved my whole face in this way is a very satisfying feeling. Just thought I'd share that with you all.
