New to straight razor shaving and appreciate any advice,

hello everybody,

my name is rene gomez, i have been looking to buy a straight razor and decided to make an account on SRP because it seems to have the biggest wealth of knowledge
so i hope to hear from many of you. So from what i understand 5/8 blade is the best for beginners, does this mean i should not go for anything else but that size? also im read that i should stay away from ebay, but the classified section here hardly has anything in that size that i like for the money im tying to spend on a razor ( about 100$ is my budget). my question would then be where do you all get razors from? i would like for them to come honed(well honed that is) and preferably have a new razor without breaking budget?

Welcome, you will enjoy your time on the forum. Many razors of reasonable cost can be found in the classifieds on this forum. The three main advertisers on this forum all have good razors for sale. If looks are not what you care about WhippeDog offers a range of sight unseen, not beautiful, but good shavers for the budget conscious and the beginner. That way you can try out various brands and sizes and points before committing yourself to anything more expensive. WhippedDog can also outfit you with a beginners strop because you are likely, like many of us beginners, going to ruin it before establishing a good stropping technique. Read the wiki's and ask a lot of questions. We are here to answer and help however we can. Brownsville what state?

Keep in mind you need more than just the razor. I have to agree with Razorfeld. Start with Whipped Dog and have some fun. They have some nicely priced full kits.

if your just learning I would recommend a 5/8 round point. it's easier to start with. the other members have given good advise. we are here to help if we can. welcome to the club and good shaving:tu

I think a beginner would be just fine starting with a 5/8 OR 6/8. I routinely use both sizes and the degree of difficulty is similar.

Look for a round point or a muted square point. An unmuted square point will be harder to start out with.

Hi and welcome. As said a 5/8 or 6/8 is recommended. Click the library link above and read through the starter info for a lot of the answers your looking for. You should be able to get a good new starter razor from the site vendors for under 100 But will get a razor from other sources (eg whipped dog and the classifieds) cheaper and as long as it's shave ready you will be fine. thank you everyone for all the positive advice im thinking of going with whipped dog only because straight razor designs is out of stock of thier more reasonably priced items. i let you know what i end up with and ask all the questions i can think of, thanks!!
