on another note, what is pre shave oil supposed to do? I use art of shaving pre shave oil (lavender) i've shaved with out it, and with it, not a huge difference in my shave I find. Just wondering if there is a reason I am supposed to use it I may be able to utilize it better if I know why I'm using it.
Also, where would I find glycerine, I've seen guys using it for improved lather, just curious!

Walmart for the glycerin. In the pharmacy section between witch hazel and rubbing alcohol.
I have found the same with pre shave oil. Not a lot of difference. Sometimes I think my skin is softer in the end but that's sometimes and I'm not sure so yeah. I rarely use any more.
My theory on pre shave oil is that if you have dry skin or get dry skin easily it will keep the lather from drying your skin and make your skin less apt to get grabbed by the blade making for a more comfortable shave. I don't use the oil but have. I prefer the Castle Forbes or Proraso, which is basically cream. I have no idea if you would get the same results from a face cream like Noxema or not.

In general pre shave oils and soaps like olive oil soap didn't do much for my shave. Then someone on the forum mentioned a bit of Cremo as a pre shave. Eureka! I tried it and by gosh and by golly I got more glide , and that even improved on the glide my uber lather provides. It's that or a little bit of Kiss My Face also as a pre shave, and cheaper too.
If you can't find glycerin at your local Walmart , the vitamin shoppe stocks it
Hey, noobs. Welcome. Great choice with Larry. He was my first for an item when I began.
I started using shave oil as one more thing to aid me along during beginning. Beginning was *really* rough for me at first.
Now, I continue to use shave oil. I really like it. Why? I use shave oil from shavesecret(walmart). It has menthol and other interesting stuff that has a profound effect on my sking. The sensation and smell are great(has gotten even better since I bought my last). I rub it in prior to my first lathering and it has the staying power through all 3 passes. It seems to help the glide along a bit, but that isn't the primary reason I use it. The smell and sensation.
Given its so cheap and pleasurable to me, I'm not going to stop using it anytime soon.
For me, pre-shave oil serves to replenish the skin's oils and elasticity after I have washed thoroughly. I let it soak in a bit while I prepare my shaving materials, then blot my skin dry with a towel before lathering. That way, I don't have a layer of oil killing the lather and keeping the water from my whiskers.
