Did you get your strop in Steve? It looked like a nice one.

    Hi Paul,

It’s in the post so I’m hoping it’ll get here before the weekend.

I’m a bit nervous to be honest, I’ve only used a board before and don’t want to hurt my edge by doing it wrong.

I suggest that you take some common newspaper and cut it into strips as wide and long as your Brand New Hanging Strop, then use something like the one on the left (2") at both ends of a single layer of paper to learn on.

If you find that you are either breaking (too much pressure) or cutting (improper technique) the newspaper then all you've wasted is a cheap piece of newspaper.

You can also add one layer of thin cardboard (cereal box type) at both ends to spread out the pressure more evenly.

WooHoo! I got my new strop today. It's so lovely!

I cut some newspaper up and stropped on it first as suggested by Cudarunner so I could get a feel for it .
I then went at it on my new strop, 10 on the canvas and 40 on the leather. It took me a while because I did it slowly, actually I only have one speed and it aint quick.

Anyway, the sticky bit that I felt with a Q-Tip was gone and I had a shave which was as good as always. I am not great at shaving but it didn't feel like I had blunted the edge.

I finished up with 10 more on the canvas and 40 on the leather then just to prove to myself I was doing OK, I shaved another patch off my arm.

The only sad thing is that I made a small cut in my strop, the leather is still there so I'm thinking that a tiny bit of super glue?

Thanks for your tip, I did it before using my new stop in anger so to speak. I'm still able to shave so I must have done OK.

Super glue dries hard, which is not what you want, something flexible like contact or rubber cement. You can get the little tubes of contact cement and it will do a billion strop nicks.

Thanks, the glue that comes in a puncture repair kit is rubber cement isn't it?

That sounds logical. I presume you are referring to a bicycle tire repair kit.
