My dilemma, please help

My dilemma is that I have been given a straight for my birthday. I haven’t used it as yet, but know that it hasn’t been honed to premium.

Its one of these Dovos but I can’t figure out which one!

I want to get another one from Lynn (and have it honed too) and also buy the Norton 4000/8000

I then want to pick up a few practise blades from ebay or wherever.

Basically which blade should I try and get from Lynn

Sounds like a good plan to me. You can't get the first razor, its out of stock. You'd have to wait.

The third razor is very good.

Hi Allan, I already have one of the first two razors but im not sure which one it is.

The 6/8 Special is a nice one to start with.

Beautiful razors. Consider graduating to an equivalent hone. The belgian coticule is a great choice for you. It's what they use at the Dovo factory.

Hi Charlie,

I'm not a honemeister or anything of the sort, but I have honed and stropped my Dovo to a hair popping edge.

So If you want to send you razor to me in Leicester, I will quite happily hone it to match mine - it wont' be perfect but it will be usable to shave with while your waiting for your other one to come from Lynn.:D

I have an update, I've had a gent I know from another forum contact me and he hones razors :D

He lives in North Wales and is happy to do the work, I'm waiting for an address and a price from him - What do the U.S Honemeisters charge?

Based on what you´ve posted you have either a 4/8 razor which is also 1/2 inch wide, or you have a 5/8 razor, which is 5/8 inch wide.

Simply put your razor on a ruler with the cutting edge against an inch marker and the spine towards the next inch marker and read the measurement. If it´s 1/2 inch wide you have a 4/8 razor, etc. etc. Or, if you think you´ve got the steady hands for it you can use a caliper or micrometer. Personally I wouldn´t press anything against the cutting edge unless I had to for restoration purposes.

If you even get a single blade that will contemplate anything let us know because you´ve got a miracle on your hands ;).

If you´re looking for 2 blades to compliment each other I´d say don´t worry about it and just go for what suits you on a second blade. I´ve seen several gents here post their enjoyment of a variety of blades from 3/8" to 9/8".

Each person has their own rate.

I stay away from expensive razors and only charge $15.00 u.s. funds postage paid in the u.s. per razor. You can send your razor to classicshaving.com where they´ll have Lynn Abrams hone it. Their prices are on their board.

There´s a list of folks from here that offer honing services in the critical info post in the newbies forum. You can PM each of them for their prices.
