Puma Special 222 6/8

Hello all,

I'm thinking about buying my first SR and I found this nice looking Puma Special 222 6/8 for around $160. There's some minor blemishes on the blade but nothing that couldn't be buffed out. Though you'd probably lose the facade "Puma Special" if you buff it to mirror finish. Any reason why I shouldn't buy it?

We don't do valuations here but that is a lot of money for a single razor, if that particular razor is worth that much to you is up to you to decide but I've gotten NOS Heljestrands for significantly less than that.

Without going too far into the whole money thing, I've seen many a Puma sell for MUCH more and some have been in worse condition.

Puma is a top shelf brand and that specimen looks to be in great shape. I'm sure you'd be well served by that razor if you decided to buy it.

I can't see why you would buff it. It is a well known top brand. If you are wondering about the price just check some other vendors or advanced search on Ebay for sold listings.

I just got a Puma in the mail yesterday, can't wait to try it today. I've been learning to leave razors as-is unless there is active corrosion going on. From the pictures that seems pretty nice and agree with Rez that you prob don't need to buff it out.

Welcome to SRP. If you can afford the $ it is a nice looking blade. The vintage Pumas are as good as it gets IME.

Thanks for the replies so far :) From looking around on eBay and other sites, I've noticed that Puma's tend to sell for (much) more in general. I just wanted to know if this particular one raises any red flags with more experienced SR users.

Well, like I said, the blade got some minor blemishes. Perhaps they weren't that visible in the pictures I posted. Here are some close ups of it

I think, if you magnify something enough you will see problems. I would just use some metal polish like Simichrome or a Cap Cod Cloth. That's probably all you need. Puma's seem to have lost their luster over the years. At one time a razor like that couldn't be had for $250 and top of the line Puma's went for well over $400+.

I agree with thebigspendur on that. A paper towel and some metal polish is all I would use on it. Start hitting it with buffing compound and high speed buffers and you'll be taking the etch along with the minor corrosion. IMHO.

Bamboo, I have purchased from that seller/restorer and his descriptions are accurate and his work is excellent. I agree with the folks above and you would not need to do anything but a very, very light polish on the blade and you do not even have to do that. That is a nice Puma.

That's a great find. Puma is one I'd like to add to my collection. Pay what it's worth to you. Use it, enjoy it.....Hell, if you choose not to move forward with it, please let me know how to get my hands on it

Looks great. As said I would just use a little polish on it. I have 3 pumas and all are wonderful shavers

Let me know where I can get a 6/8" Heljestrand for that money and I'll buy a few.:D

So what is your issue here Bamboo. In your OP you mention the blemishes that could be buffed out.
I don't see any thing needed except a light polish or do nothing at all and enjoy the razor. The sellers photos appear to be completely accurate in portraying the issue. The "blemishes" will have no effect whatsoever on the razors potential for a great shave.
If you do not want the razor you have a member who posted that he would be glad to have it if you would pass him the information.

Ah, sorry. Forgot the question in the last post. I was wondering if the blemishes could turn into a more serious problem and if it would be smarter to get them buffed out because of that (since the seller told me he would do that for me if I wanted it) or if they don't matter and can be left alone (besides a little polish).

I understand Bamboo. It is a nice razor so I guess you have to decide how much of the blade puma identification on the face of the blade you would be willing to lose. If you do get
