My very first Razor

Hello everybody, totally new to the cut throat world of RAZOR.

Well, I was very excited when my "NOS!! Dovo Bergischer Lowe 6/8 Straight Razor. Prof. Honed and Shave Ready!!" arrived in the mail today.
I could hardly wait to try it out.....

When I did the hair follicle test I was a little disappointed that it didn't cut through my hair like a samurai sword, in fact my first shave was a complete failure. :thinking:
Since it was able to cut hair on my arms, I felt that it just needed some stropping and I would be set to go, lots of videos on Youtube how hard could this be.:D Back to lather on my face and ready to give it another try...luckily I didn't get rid of my disposable BIC shavers.

What now?:hmmm:

I guess I have a steep learning curve, but I will never surrender..... I will master the art of the straight edge razor.
Are there any Hone Meisters in the Toronto area?

I would appreciate if someone could tell me a little about the razor I bought and what the value might be, I am sure I spent way too much on this but it is absolutely mint and I fell in love with it on first sight.

Can't give a value as it is not allowed on this site. However, Dovo makes a good razor. New ones today start just under $100 and go up. Some people say they are selling a razor shave ready. It is left to their interpretation of shave ready that is the problem. You may want to consider sending to Lynn for a good bonding or if you know how do it yourself. Good luck.

Depending on where you got it, it might not be shave ready. I think there are quite a few Toronto based users who can probably help you out. Usually a freshly honed razor won't need stropping before the 1st shave, if you did, you might have rolled the edge (very common beginner mistake).

Beautiful razor you have there. I'm in the "get your razor pro-honed" camp. Razorfeld has recently announced that there is a special dispensation for those who may need(for one reason or another) to return to the accursed multi-blade thingies.

Ah, and yes, no evaluations in open forum.

Welcome! That looks like a nice razor. If you want to have your razor honed you can call menessentials.ca, they have somebody who hones their blades. They will give you the info to get in touch with him and you can drop off your razor at their place and pick it up a couple of weeks later when it's ready. When I got my first razor I had it honed because it was described as not shave ready. I might be a good idea to have it honed so you'll know for sure it's shave-ready and you'll have a feel of what a shave-ready razor feels like. I'm less than two months into straight razor shaving but I'm having so much fun I just don't see myself shaving any other way.

Shave ready is a relative term. Your first shave, generally speaking, is not going to be great.

My razor is on its way to Phil as we speak, buddy at work lives just down the street from him, so this works out well, thanks for the info.

Does anyone know the history of the Dovo Bergische Lowe razor, I think it may be circa 1930 is that correct? Are they rare or just common? ;)
