Hello
I have bought a nice razor to practice with from e-Bay, now I know it isn't shave ready, but I want to learn to sharpen it
How hard is it?!
I have ordered the Norton 4000/8000 and the Belgian Yellow Coticule and stoens for start it (Cotigura) and so on
Also I have ordered Lynn's DVD
Now, will I get it? is it really that "impossible " or can a newbie do it very good and shave with it?:hmmm:

It's not difficult, but I'd get one or two practice pieces done before working on that Goldedge. You want to make sure you're getting an even bevel and with a minimum amount of honing.

A newbie can't get honing. By the time you figure it out though, you won't be a newbie anymore. Spend some time reading through here before you try and start.
First, keep in mind that the razor you get, professionally honed by hand, will be either shave ready or darn close, absent proper stropping. So first, learn and practice that.
Second, and I guess this is just me and I'm still the only one, don't attack a razor that is nearly shaving perfectly with a 4K stone. That would be like removing the body of a car because you don't like the color of the paint.

So I have learned a lot!!!
But still you know, there is always the fear of ruin the blade because I will do it wrong, like no keeping the back of the razor on the hone all the time and so on
And I think the most hard time for me will be to know if it is a shave ready or not after a few passes on the stone :confused:

That's right. Some edges are in better shape than others. My first keeper arrived from eBay in such good shape that I was able to get a good edge on it myself. It was the first straight shave I had and it was a good one. A little advice from Lynn and it became great. Haven't looked back since.Quote:

Get the razor honed. Practice shaving. Honing is not hard. But, it does take time, practice, and patience. With that comes experience. Straight Razor Shaving is not about honing. It's about learning to get the smoothest, most comfortable, and closest shave possible.
You will learn to hone, and strop. These are learned skills. But wouldn't it be nice to be able to use a straight razor first.
You bought a lot of tools, you need to learn how to use these tools. It takes time.
Do you have a Strop or a pasted strop? Just because you use a straight razor dosen't mean you have to spend a lot of money. A good shave ready razor, a strop, and a pasted strop will do the trick for now. Believe me, you'll get to use your hones.
