I really really wanted to believe Dovo but!!!!

So everyone says that razors from the factory are not shave ready although the DOVO site says they are and should not hone them. Well, If I knew how to post a photo of my face you could definitely tell-- IT IS NOT TRUE -- I have other Dovo's that were professionally honed and they are wonderful I received a Prima Klang in the mail yesterday and in the package was a copy of what DOVO says on their site so I said to myself SELF lets try it. Did not have a happy ending. Well there you have it my experience with a FACTORY SHAVE READY.

I'm sorry for your experience. Lesson learned?

Lots of folks find it hard to believe a quality manufacturer would misrepresent the facts, but in the case of shave ready, many do.

Yes, this is true. "Shave ready" is sometimes used to help sell a product. The face doesn't lie.

Well I guess this answers my question. I just received my Dovo Bismark straight razor and was going to wait to the weekend to try it out, just it case I tore my face up from either it not being truly shave ready or just my inexperience. I was going to get on here and ask if the claim of "shave ready" razors from reputable manufacturers was honest, I guess that answers that.

That is rather disappointing, I am in Parkersburg, WV and very much doubt there is someone local that can hone my razor, which means sending it out to, well, no offense, but to someone I do not know and have little reason to trust.

If you go to 'member services' in the SRP classifieds you'll find members who hone razors for a nominal fee, including Lynn Abrams, the man who started SRP and has honed literally thousands of razors. Next to each members name, in member services, is a number that you can click on to read customer feedback. I haven't heard of any who 'can't be trusted' and if that became the case they wouldn't be here long.

There is no Universal definition of shave ready. When you stop and think about it shave ready means it will shave. it doesn't mean it will shave good or be comfortable just gets the job done.

Factory honing is done by hand one at a time so there is much variation. You can get one that shaves pretty darn good and then get just the opposite.

Back in the day getting a brand new razor that wasn't truly shave ready was a serious issue. Folks simply wouldn't accept it period.

On one occasion, when I dropped by the Classic Edge and met with Phil, I purchased a new TI when I was there...we both looked at the edge, and he said it looked pretty darn good to him, and I agreed. So he asked me to give it a try with the factory edge, and if I didn't like it, he would hone it up no problem for free.

Must admit, when I used it, it was very nice, it was as shave ready as I've ever had, and that was right from the TI factory....but as noted, that is probably the exception, rather than the rule.

I agree that in the past T.I put some high quality edges. But today I would never let a client shave with a T.I without a full honing. All the razor companies are under a lot of stress due to demand vs out put. Once in a while I still see a good edge but that is usually one out of a hundred. I always recommend that clients ask for their razors to be honed especially since there is no extra charge. Most stores today offer razors professionally honed razors anyway so why not take advantage.

Just a thought, and nothing against the original poster but ..... Dovo says it is 'shave ready'. I've gotten some brand new razors that I did not have the vendor hone that would shave. All but one that I recall needed to be honed to be up to my particular standards but, the point being, they would shave. Shaving with a straight razor is an acquired skill and it is quite possible that an experienced straight razor shaver could have gotten a shave with that Dovo.

OTOH, it happens occasionally that a new straight razor shaver is unable to get a good shave with a pro honed razor. A small percentage but I've seen it every so often. I'm sure many of the pro honers on this board have experienced sending a razor out, having the recipient complain. Getting the razor back, testing it, and finding there was nothing wrong with the honing to start with.

Like anything else in life....it will just "depend". I have received razors (Boker Tree Brand and Ralf Aust) that shaved as sweetly right out of the box as blades I had sent off to be honed by some of the more well known "Honemeisters" in the arena. I have also had blades return from a "professional honing" that were not remotely as well done as some factory fresh OEM edges.

That was primarily the reason I picked myself up a few rocks and decided to sharpen my own blades. There is a learning curve, but once you get the knack, it isn't difficult at all. And, as you continue, your skills will improve, and you will never have to mail out another razor...ever.

Lynn hones hundreds of Dovo's a year...new ones for Straight Razor Designs, that leads me to believe they are NOT shave ready from the factory.

Sorry you had a bad experience. Try testing before you shave next time you get one that is supposed to be shave ready!

Another thing to warn about. Ebay shave ready is just as bad as factory shave ready. Unlikely that it will be shave ready even if they say that they tested it.

I don't trust eBay if it says shave ready. It would be like trusting to put my head in a lions mouth!

Well I did go with a friend to some antique shops in hopes of finding some straight razors. We saw two but they weren't important enough to buy. One had a bad frown on it. I did however run across this Rolls Razor that i got a decent deal for $35. I think that was good in the box & complete with two different sets of instructions.
It was also fun to get out for awhile.

Well I used a straight that I purchased new from SRD before I tried the factory edge that was my comparison and HUGE difference

I think SRD puts more effort into satisfying their customers because from what I understand, Lynn is a part owner of that place.
