One of "those" days

So I got out my recently refreshed R. Aust 6/8 to shave test it. I had refreshed it on felt with Diamond and CrOx sprays (2 felt pads) and then stropped after watching Lynn's video, again https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=.

Lathered up for a test shave...still pulling. hmmmmmm.

Thought maybe it was my lather, so I dialed it up some, but still no go. Finished my face with my original Hoffritz from the 1980s. All was well with that one.

So tomorrow will be a refresh of the R. Aust on the Naniwa 12k, and if that doesn't work I'll go to my new and newly lapped 8k, then 4k.

Hopefully, I can be trained via video. If not, well we'll see what's next.

Sometimes it's one of those, "if at first...blah, blah, blah...try, try again" days!

I have razors in my collection that no matter what I do, I cant get a smooth shave with. Others.....just seem like they hone up perfect the first time. Not sure if it is my technique (probably) or something else. Most will give a decent shave but not as good as I want and see with my other razors. One I fought for a while and finally went to 1000 k and re-honed the bevel, they say it all the time but its worth repeating. Bevel Bevel Bevel.

I've run into this issue before as well. The biggest advancement of my honing came in the form of a lighted magnifier to be able to accurately inspect the bevel.

Actually, I have one. I'm just not sure what I'm looking at or for :shrug:

Read this on the forum many times and an experienced honer told me to give it a try and it worked, and of course it worked when I thought about it, but I used a black marker along both edges of the blade and a loupe. I could then tell which parts were hitting my Nani 12k...if there was black marker left...it obviously didn't hit the stone fully or properly.

From my extremely limited, check with others, point of view....:shrug:

Did the 12k today followed by .5 diamond on felt and a good stropping. Test shaved and I think I hit it...first try...first win. Granted it was a razor honed by Lynn 6 months ago and used by me only about 25 times, but it had gotten rough. First post refresh shave DFS, ask good as I do! Crossed fingers (need an emoticon for that). Thanks for everyone's help from the beginning!

Good to hear. The best part is the more you do it, the better you will get.....hopefully. Sometimes I think I regress sometimes with my honing.

I probably will...my wife asked why I was moving so slowly (she watches me run kitchen knives over a diamond steel quickly). I said, "because I use it on my face....it's a different concept."
