I should have known Lynn honed this one originally; the bevel was a mirror, even though the edge was messed up. I think we're all squared away now, though; the test shave this morning was real nice. We'll know in a few days when Matt gets his razor back...

lynn is 100 % correct...dont fault the honemiester in this case...lynn doent send out a faulty razor...with regard to nicks not likely he uses a microscope to inspect his work...with regard to his work being an ok hone thats bs! Ive spent a lot of time sitting with him watching and honing razors with him...matt as a newbie you arent expected to get it right the first time and to be blunt you dont have the experience or knowledge to know or comment on what caused the damage to your razor...you should have contacted lynn and sent it back to him so he could of examined it and determined what you did to alter the edge...dont rush to blame the messenger instead step back take a breath relax everyone will help...charlie
Even though I've been at this for a a few months now I managed to screw up my Lynn-honed Dovo pretty quickly by stropping it poorly. It's not hard to screw up and doesn't take much to make it shave poorly. Thankfully I was able to get things straightened out fairly easily with just a few passes on the 0.5 side of the paddle.
Experience with trying to get my first razor from JoshEarl shaving sharp again helped as I had screwed that one up rather worse (and didn't have anything to fall back on at the time)... *sigh*

Clarman, I did contact Lynn and he was more than willling to help me out and was nice in the process. I thought I might need to shell out 30 bucks since the service is provided through Classic shaving, and in the meantime I started talking to Josh and ended up sending the razor to him. In the future, I would send any of my razors to to Lynn in a heartbeat.. I agree that my technique and stropping were to blame, I was simply amazed at the work I did to my razor in 4 days. Obviously, Lynn is held in high regard and I understand that his work is always top notch and close to perfect. if I sounded as though I was giving lynn credit for screwing my razor up, I was misinterpreted.Quote:

I'll jump in too and clarify that I wasn't dissing Lynn. He's got years of experience, I have a few months. He's honed more than 7,000, and I've honed about 50. :) Lynn = honemeister. Josh = neophyte.
My assessment of this particular blade was that although the edge was no longer quite there, the razor had clearly been honed properly at some point because the bevel had a mirror polish rather than the coarse-looking grind marks that I've seen on other new Dovos.

This is really no big deal guys. I have seen a newly honed edge really chipped up just from hitting the handle on closing or the edge rolled over from stropping or a bunch of other fun things. This happens as you learn this sport. People drop them, nick them on faucets.....you name it, it will happen. The main thing is just to keep learning and having fun. I honed hundreds of my own razors and several hundreds for other folks before I ever offered any type of service or the kind of advice I am seeing on the forum from relatively new people and I still consider myself learning after almost 8,000 razors. There are a lot of weeks that I hone 50 razors.........lol. I applaud all the new guys learning to hone and trying to help others and will always offer any help that I can for you guys.

Lynn is the right man for sharpening a razor. I just want to know how he is doing with the grinder. Were is the list for those new razors? Lynn knows more about ST8's than any one of us. Do I get a discount now, when you build that razor?:roflmao:roflmao :roflmao :y
