Could be. Is it possible to have two mid life crises? I think I had the first one when I was 21. I don't really feel like buying a convertible.
Great post. I am looking at buying my first SE after years with a Merkur DE. And I've been looking at the same Dovo you are buying. But how did you decide on a 5/8?
JMO, but if it was me, and they're in stock I'd pick the Ralf Aust over the Dovo.
On the size question, lots of folks start with a 5/8. It's a little easier to maneuver when learning, although there's really not much difference.
@Erosadis... seriously, this is almost exactly how I got into straight shaving. I'm a big fan of 1911 pistols and my favorite part was cleaning them after the range. I loved the "sit and focus and think of nothing else". I swear I use straights for the same reason. I like the challenge of learning something new, and I love zoning out and doing something methodical. I also build my own computers and do all the upgrades around my house.
I'll check it out. Why do you prefer the Ralf Aust?
Definitely possible to have 2 mid-life crises. Here's me 10 years ago w/ my convertible Caddy:

I also started with the 5/8 Aust from SRD. It's a great beginner razor. Keep in mind though - if you think guns are expensive, you ain't seen nothing yet. I have three 1911's that MAYBE add up to what I've spent on razors and supplies over the last year.
Could possible end up with a wood stove, I ended up with one in a 900sqft cabin in Tue woods. Guess it's cheaper then a Porsche
Great posts from all of you. Thanks. I may have to start with a conversion of my fireplace to wood burning first. I would only be doing it so I have an excuse to buy and ax and a chain saw.
I picked the 5/8 because I am just starting and don't have a clue what I am doing. Once I get some experience I'll probably switch to a Katana or a Rambo Knife or a switch blade.
@Haroldg Why the Ralf Aust? Birthday is still seven weeks away and I can change my daughters mind.
@MajorEthanolic That Caddy is spectacular. I want one...Damn, 2nd Mid-Life crisis indeed. I guess I'm going to have to fix my Harley.
I bought my first 1911 a couple of months ago. I love it. It's a Sig Sauer Ultra Two Tone. I favor my P228, it shoots like I know what I am doing.
I'm probably going to have to get some type of razor like a Gillette so I can learn how to shave again and repair the damage when I'm learning the Straight Razor. Or not, it's not like I have anyone to impress.

Sig is also an excellent choice, but don't put it to your face !
I have both Dovo and R. Aust, and personally feel the Aust, for the money, is 1) a better shaver, and 2) has better fit and finish. I bought the entry level 5/8 Aust first, then a Dovo 5/8 then a R. Aust 6/8 stainless....all from SRD and honed the same. The 5/8 Aust gave me a much better shave when I was first starting. It (as well as the other 2) are still in my 7 razor rotation (3 others are in a drawer, temporarily).
As fair warning, that about matches the number of handguns I have in my "rotation". Mid-late life is an expensive time :D
Thanks Haroldg48. I think my daughter just changed her mind.
Fair warning taken. Mid-late life has already become expensive. I see a prostate exam in my future.
