What the hell is the difference? Are scuttles designed to keep things warm? Will stone make it too cold?
Scuttles are designed to keep the lather warm. The scuttle can be preheated with hot water. This will warm up the stone/pottery. Dump the old water out and put in new hot water and viola.. nice and warm.
Scuttles can be shaped more mug like or bowl like. The difference is in the depth and width of the lather building cavity.
Scuttles have inner and outer bowls. The outer bowl is to put warm/hot water. The inner bowl is where you place the brush while not in use. Some scuttles have a textured inner bowl for the purpose of building up a lather, however, that's not the primary function of a scuttle. Also, scuttles are not intended to be the bowl or mug that you keep soap in, so if you use soaps, you'll need a bowl/mug.
If you buy a modern scuttle from a place like dirty bird or georgetown it is ment to keep your brush and lather warm. A bowL can be used to lather if you are not a face lather type or hold soap. Mug is typically used for holding soap.
Scuttle's = heats up the lather by using hotwater inside. so when you apply the lather if has warmness to it. abit of a extra luxery feel.
Mug = same as bowl just to work up a lather in witout any heat to the lather itself.
Myself i perfer Non of them. i work up the lather in my face with the brush since thats what gives me best results in softening up the beard.
I don't personally like the bigger scuttles for lathering as they tend to cool off faster than the ones used for keeping suds warm because of the wider bowls. Everyone has their own preferences. Some lather in a separate bowl and some face lather. It really is a matter of trying to find what you get the most comfort from.
Have fun.

Is this actually useful, or just pretty?
I haven't used that bowl personally. It is pretty, but I wouldn't pay $45 + shipping for a soap bowl, but that's just me. I keep my soap in an apothecary mug I got for about $10 on amazon. Nothing special, but it works. I opted for subtle hints to SWMBO that I wanted a Georgetown Pottery G20 scuttle until she got me one.
I have only ever used a bowl first a thin Stainless steel bowl now & currently have a 4" stone bowl to help lather building
I just put some hot water in the sink & sit the bowl in it & it works fine
haven't been able justify to myself buying a $100 or more fancy bowl with a built is hot water cup (scuttle)

Personally I use a scuttle and love it! I use it like a bowl in the summer months and in the winter months I put the hot water in the reservoir to keep the lather nice and warm. Nothing for me is more luxurious than nice warm lather on your face on a cold winter morning. I have a bigger one like Lynn mentioned and it keeps the lather nice and warm for my three pass shave. I also like how the scuttle looks in my bathroom. With the straight edge blades, the strop hanging and the can of shaving cream to me it gives my bathroom more of a old school look. my 2 cents
