No Longer a Honing Virgin (well maybe)

Well I've been using my razor for about three months and figured it needed a little honing. Couldn't justify spending $80 on a Norton so I picked up 2 waterstones (slip stones 4000 and 8000 grit) from Shopsmith, Inc. for about $25 with shipping. Well let me tell you my sweet peas, it turned out pretty good. Just reset my bevel a little with the 4000 (about 5 strokes) and did about 10 strokes on the 8000 ---- (kind of did a little pyramid action) --- sent it to the chromium oxide strop, stropped it --and it shaved beautifully ---realized what I had been missing. So even a new guy on a budget can get good results. Later gators,

Well done!:nj While it's easy to go out and spend the money and get the standard tools/toys, it's always refreshing to see someone get the same results without having to 'invest' in equipment! A few dollars wisely spent means that much more to blow on razors!:w

How fast do these stones cut, Justin? They certainly are a good alternative for the man with a budget. Of course, I know nothing of a budget being independently wealthy :w

Hey Matt --- I've honed a fair number of knives using Arkansas oil stones --that's all I've used ---and they cut fairly slow ----so compared to that they seem to cut pretty quick. But I think others have mentioned that they are slower cutting than a Norton --but I wouldn't know. My razor wasn't for off so it didn't take much and I might be a able to do a little more but I am cautious with the over-honing bit and all. But it was quick enough for me ---- my pockets aren't complaining ;).

Plus, even if I have money to spare --- I tend to try to go the harder/sometimes cheaper route to get the most out of/learn more and then move on to the bigger and better --- it never has failed me.

Unfortunatley not so cheap in Australia.

Those stones are a nice price, so I enquired about shipping costs to Australia. Here is the reply I received.

I just started my journey with a hone recently too (this week actually) and I'm pleased with the results so far. I took two ofthe Polish Razors and got them cutting sideburn/cheek hair no problem (not like butter, but that's for later). I also took a J Henckels that I got while surfing the bay and got it cutting hairs on a pasted strop (still not butter).
Funny how we came in on the same month and started honing in the same month...:hmmm:
Still need to get these razors to slice through some chin hair (brillo pad)

Way to go, Justin!

Now, I do think that you may enjoy this even more if you get a fine barber's hone to use after the 8K and before the chromium... Too bad good Swatys are kinda expensive lately...

Actually, you can probably just try boron before the chromium too - this should be cheap.

Oh, and did you try the newspaper thing? Might like this too

And I don't even have boron carbide - I usually use a Coticule or an Escher before the Cromium

(I have to check my father's pipes - he used to work in Scandinavia, maybe I'll score a Bo or something :D )

Good job, Justin! I wish I had seen that earlier.

But I really do like the Norton 4K/8K. I have had a fair amount of success myself this week. I honed up a couple of my straights and it has made a world of difference in my shaves! Now I just need a chromium paddle strop and I will be good to go.

Thank you --- I have a feeling that the Norton is a couple of steps in improvement over these waterstones ---but I think they're a pretty good buy. Congrats on your honing success as well.
