Introduction / New guy from Germany

Hi Guys,

let me introduce myself at first.
My name is Nicholas, I am 30 years old and was born and live in Gemany.

I am into (seriously) collecting straight razors for about two years now, prefering old carbon-steel models of all sorts of manufacturers.
A little restauration of old blades is also one of my hobbies, which I sadly am not as good in as I would like to be. Still improving, though.

A long time ago I have learned a little english in school and so I would be pleased if you guys could tolerate some of my verbal-accidents for some time until I am in practice again.

Until now I have only visited and read this forum once in a while and have only been posting in the german razor-forum.

Today I have decided to give it a shot here, testing if I could get along.

For hints/reminders on how to improve my english-language-skills I will alwas be pleased.

Welcome Nick. Sorry if you don't go by that nickname, if you want to be more formal, just say so. I had a good friend I always called 'Nick', and I tend to give almost every male a nickname. Your English is very good. We shall teach you American, and there is no sense to the VT shootings. Just the ragings of a sick mind.
Erica, only the ignorant think the folks in WV don't wear shoes. I do remember, as a child of course, driving through West Virgina and what I saw from the highway. I also was in WV only two years ago and was impressed. Welcome also.

WV is short for West Virginia. Too the uninformed
( mainly other American's ) the people from this
state are a bunch of ignorant, uneducted hillbillies.

While some West Virginian's are offended by this,
other's such as myself and Erica can laugh it off.

Besides, those who anger us, control us.......

Wait --- WV isn't made up of a bunch of one-toothed hillbillies like those from Deliverance? Hum --- now I have to rethink everything I thought I knew --well anyway Louisiana is made up of a bunch of one-toothed Deliverance extras --- "Where you goin city boy?" ---- so you better watch youself. ;)

How do you know when your a real West Virginian?

When you look on family reunions as a chance to
meet girls..... :roflmao

While I like John's song the Blue Ridge mountains aren't
in WV. And the Shenandoah River only flows through
Jefferson County which is in the extreme eastern
pandhandle. These people if they had a choice would
rather be a part of Virginia.

The part I live in, Logan County in southern WV. It's
definately different. Not much here, and IMHO only a
native could tolerate the place. But it's home so what
can I say.

Oh, we have mountains...:) More damn mountains than
you can shake a stick at. We are the Mountain State,
but it's the Allegheny Plateau part of the Appalachians.

In fact my house sits against a mountain..... :)

And we have lot's of mountain mommas.... :roflmao

:OT :OT You have strayed a bit. I hear that in WV, even if you get divorced, you can still be brother and sister. The people that live in that state rreally take a lot of flak that isn't deserved .

Welcome aboard, my name is Colleen....aka "Soapmistress". Do you have mountains in Germany? I've seen pictures on TV....and have noticed that the countryside of Germany looks a lot like parts of West Virginia, so it must be very beautiful there.....

Your English is very good and I'm always amazed at people who can write and speak other languages, you are off to great start.

LOL....I'm to old to remember my geography from school...forgive me ;) I know the Swiss Alps, .....Bavaria seems to bring images of "fine chocolate".....am I getting closer?

Is there anyone who has gone through RAD who doesn't. Vegates Nick, and welcomen. Your English is allot better than my German, I lived in Germany for about Ten years. My oldest son was born in Heidelberg, But that was a long time ago. I still want a TRUE Wietsen beer every once and a while.

Collect? Not officially but I buy almost anything that takes my fancy (that sounds a bit dodgy).
I thought you were going to say cuckoo clocks or Hansel and Gretel, Colleen but now you have let slip your weakness and I'm sure your not old enough to have forgotten your school days. ;)

it's been 28 years....LMAO...no wonder I can't remember. :thinking:

I purchased all of my razors from ebay, I didn't mean to collect any either...lol, but I had to stop....I was definately beginning to show symptoms of RAD. Of course now I can see allllll these wonderful razors up for bid, immediately to our left.... I clicked on one the other day :w

I'm sure you look like you left school yesterday.
Doesn't your husband think your mad for buying old razors? If I was in his shoes I'd be worried you were either planning to cut my throat while I was asleep or were hinting I needed to shave. Have you tried offering to shave him to see how he reacts? :)
I know I was very diplomatic while my daughter had the razor against my throat. "No that didn't hurt at all, dear. Don't worry about a little nick like that I have another 7 pints of blood to spare" ;)

Of course the german parts of the alps are much bigger, higher and better than the swiss parts and so is our chocolate :D

Helloooooo, waving from the mountains of West Virginia.

It sounds to me like the German Alps must be Beautiful and if they have "fine" chocolate and great beer....I'll have to come and visit one day :D

I enjoyed the Weltenburg beer. After close to 1000 years, those monks have learned how to make beer.

Yup - we have it pretty good over here for beer. And surprisingly, in my region at least, wine. It takes a little getting used to after a lifetime of drinking dry southern hemisphere wines, but the reds from my region are amongst some of the best I have ever tasted.

The irony is that most people only know blue nun, liebfraumilch and black tower, and these wines are virtually unknown inside of Germany. They export the rubbish and keep the good stuff here.

Many of the European makers of wine and beer are not large enough to be more than local or national in distribution. There is a nice Hungarian winery, Gal Tabor. I first had it on a Lufthansa flight. Can't find it in California. The Italians probably have hundreds of wineries. If they get to this country, they have to be large and the price is three times what it is in Rome.
