    Default Classifieds

I have become fascinated by the fact that so many new members that come to SRP ask variations of the same question: "where could I find a good razor for a first timer at a reasonable price?" Lots of us answer with the standard "look for a vendor that sells shave-ready, blah, blah, blah...and you might want to check the classifieds. Several, I've PMd saying that exactly what they were looking for was for sale there,

Evidently, few go there for whatever reason. Right now, unless they've sold since I started this post there are at least four bargains that would be perfect for a beginner, and others that I would buy, were I not fully loaded with similar blades to the ones there that are in my price range and on my want list.

It is a mystery to me, why some of these blades are not snatched up, but instead we get asked repeatedly about Dovos and other new production brands with fancy spine work, or nice engraving with gold wash on the blade, or horn scales, etc.

A quality razor well honed razor, which virtually ALL in the classifieds are, shave as well or better than most new production razors at significantly less cost, and many are being sold by people who an alert new member should be able to realize as quality people who hang around SRP. "We (you) know where they live" folks, you have nothing to lose.

Sorry for the rant, but I hate to see good people with good products at bargain prices wait for a sale, or reduce already low prices, while other, no doubt "good people" new members go to eBay or Amazon, or a retail store in a mall or elsewhere and get disappointed.

I know starting out I was leery about "used" razors for hygienic reasons. I think it's a hurdle for new straight razor users to get over. There is also the flash/wow factor. Starting out I thought the Dovo Bismarck was the pinacle with the fancy etching and scales. Now I consider them a bit garish.

It does seem that there is a lot of good, beginner priced razors in the Classifieds currently, even more so than usual.

I agree with you completly. It is almost unbelievable that some of these razors languish in the classifieds.

Variation on same story from me...

A few months ago I saw a razor in the classifieds that I immediately recognized as perfect for a beginner. I don't remember its specifics but it was a round point 5/8 or 6/8. It was in excellent condition, a quality brand, and from a frequent seller. I think the price was about $50.

I responded to several (more than 5 less than 10) beginner's posts asking for recommendations for a beginner's razor and each time I recommended that specific razor. To my recollection it took well over a month for the razor to sell.

The classifieds have the best bargains for beginners. Unlike "sight unseen" options, in the classifieds you get multiple photos of a variety of razors and you know exactly what you are getting. You will pay a little more but you will get a lot more.

I have to agree with you also. I have been shaving with a straight for a little over a month, a month and a half . I bought my razors off the classified on this site. I cant say that I could not be happier. I bought all 3 from the same vendor who was very nice and greatful for the sale. I cant say he made a whole lot from the sale. I think he sells them to get people to try the art with something decent at a great price.

The best part is I only about 1/4 the price I would have if I bought new. I also got 3 razors that are different sizes so when I decide to buy a new one I know what size I want.

    there my 2 cents worth.

I agree. I have seen many good condition razors in the classifieds at about the same price as a sight unseen razor. I too have put it in many posts. I have also sold many in there at what I think is a bargain price. It kind of reminds of of that old saying about horses and water.

There always seems like an interesting variety of razors in there for pretty good prices. I would trust our classifieds way over Ebay when I comes to shave ready razors. We have our reputations to uphold when we sell here
