"Don't do it you will cut your throat"

As most people of my age I started out with a Bic style razor, and my face did not like it at all. I had razor bumps with every shave; so I stopped shaving for a long time. When I started looking into using a straight razor, a barber told me that I should not do it because I would cut my throat. I told him hell yah I'm going to cut my self and quite possibly my throat. If you don't try new things in life it things get stale, so I set off in to the inter web to find out about straight razor shaving. After reading many articles and watching lots of videos on the benefits of using a straight razor, and how when your son grew up you could teach him the art of the shave, and hand him down your razor and so on down through the generations. Thats when I knew that this was for me. I still don't shave all the time but when I do I have a good time doing it.

That's what my GF thought as well, 8 years later I'm still standing lol!!

Silly barber. I got into straights partly because was in the best Sheffield barbers and the lass offered a straight shave after doing my hair. Was such a pleasant experience. Now I really enjoy doing it myself, but I also recommend a good barber shave once in a while. The "manly" version of pampering.

I have done it and came out without a Nick.

Bumps from carts have caused many a man to seek alternative hair removal methods.

Shaved during Hurricane Ike. No power = pitch black and no hot water, wind howling around, trees crashing down all around. No problems. Though it did take a few minutes longer.

I think that in circumstances such as those, I would not bother with shaving.

:dropjaw: Sorry you just can't make a statement like that without an explanation. What was on your social agenda that was so important that you needed shave? And how did you get there??

Yes please share, I am wondering the same thing!

When you are on a cruise vacation you shave every night for dinner. Back then you dressed in shirt, tie and jacket. The shave was successful with no problems. The cruise ships were much smaller then, only 40,000 tons.

Right, because accidental throat sittings while shaving led to the demise of many young and grown men over the past how many centuries?

Normally I had no trouble shaving on a DDH (helicopter carrying destroyer) of about 22,000 ton displacement with a Cart or DE razor. I could never see myself in a heavy sea state where you held on to something to keep yourself on your feet with one hand and tried to shave with the other using a straight razor. It surely does depend on the sea state and size of the bateau you are on what shave weapon of choice you use if any.

I always think it's so interesting how many people say this when I tell them they should try straight razor shaving. "Are you kidding me? I'd kill myself!" Really?......I mean unless your hand is going to suddenly convulse and yank backward with a sawing motion towards your throat.....i think you'll be ok. I knew I'd cut myself when I started shaving with one, but it's never really been much worse than what I've done with a cartridge razor.....well ok maybe a little worse, but not to the point where I'm going to up the life insurance policy by any means. ;-)

I had this very conversation yesterday as I was coming off shift. One of the guys on the next crew had a large band aid across his side burn. He said he cut himself shaving to which I replied "that wouldn't have happened if your shaved like a man." We all know that aint true but hey I had to bust his chops. He asked what I used and I told him a straight. "Oh man I would butcher myself for sure, you gotta be careful with those things." He then proceeded to tell me he lost the handle to his cartridge razor so he just held onto it with a hemostat(surgical clamps). All I could do was shake my head. Before I left, I gave him a little insight on this great past time of ours and I may have a convert on my hands. Lucky thing for him I have a spare razor and strop:D

I can't imagine carrying my shaving gear to work, never mind actually shaving at work. Surprised HR doesn't come down on you for bringing a "weapon" to work.

I work in Prudhoe Bay,two weeks on and two off,The only thing I travel with back and forth is a small carry on.

I used to have a locker at a gym at the University of Iowa. I kept a 7 day razor set, a strop, brush and mug, and a barber hone in that locker for almost 10 years. I used to get a few odd looks when I would strop at my locker or shave at one of the 8 sinks in a row. Only a few people ever asked my about how I shaved. One guy asked me "are those legal?"

One older guy stood out though. He came around the corner, stopped dead, and yelled (I mean YELLED) "Good God, a straight man!!!" In the men's locker room, I'm pretty sure those out of line of sight were a bit puzzled.

LoL that's funny,Ya I get strange looks,guys that look away like if they don't look they will be safe and then turn and walk out.Then there are the guys that can't believe what there seeing.I had one guy last week ,a old timer that said ah the art of shaving,I stoped wet shaving years ago and went electric,I said as I was doing a upstroke on the neck: turned in your man card when you did that.He didn't know what to say but came back in while I was on my second pass and said I did not turn in my man card turned around and walked out.I had to stop shaving due to the tears.

The fact that he had to come back in just for the purpose of denying turning in his man card proves that he already had turned it in.

By the way, where can I get one of those?

I actually googled it because I thought about printing some out to give out and low and behold there is such a thing,it's a web site were for 10 bucks you get a Man Card that's like a credit card and you get two revocation cards to take someone's away.The web page has stories of man card revocation as well as manly man stuff lol.

In the excitement prior to landfall - hurricanes being a particularly slow-moving natural disaster - I hadn't shaved in a couple of days so I was pretty scruffy. You know those sliding collapsible stocks they user on the old CAR-15's? Well, I had one on my SP1, and they're *really* prone to catching whiskers at the joint and yanking them out, and I figured I wouldn't be wanting the distraction. It turns out it didn't matter anyway, when the looters came around I had the HK91 on me not the AR.

Lived on the coast for years. Having ridden out several hurricanes myself - nothing. If you live in an area with any sort of population density you won't be evacuating. Unless you want to ride out a hurricane inside your car. The highway will be packed, and you'll be stuck.

You won't be going anywhere or doing anything - any store with common sense will be closed down. The rest will be inaccessible due to flooded streets and downed flora. If it's a particularly large one, you'll have a few day's down time. Phone and power out. No internet. Still nowhere to go due to debris in the road. Safe to expect to be housebound for 3 full days minimum (day 3 you can start yard cleanup.)

You would, out of sheer boredom if nothing else.

Never really seen any looters in our area. Would almost be a welcome bit of excitement to the usual mundane life interruption that is a hurricane. Usually my biggest concerns are the rather tall pine trees adjacent to the house. It's a little scary looking out the window and seeing a 50 ft tree bending like a twig in the wind. To solve this I stopped looking out the window at the tree. Out of sight, out of mind.
