I generally tape to protect the spine. I use electrical tape. If the blade is a full wedge you may need two or three layers o tape.
I use Scotch brand 3M 88 vynel electrical tape but what ever you decide to use check the thickness of it and stay with that size. 3M has several different thickness of tape and colors. the thickness of the tape and no. of layers will make a difference in the size of the bevel. be careful when applying tape the edge might get you.
Whatever you buy, that is new should work fine. I like 3M, used them for a bunch of different stuff over the years. Just stay consistent. If you switch tapes and go back to the hones for a touch up on the 12k with a much thicker/thinner tape, it changes the geometry (ever so slightly, but enough to make a difference)
Thanks guys. I will pick a tape and stick with it...
the only advantage I have noted to the 3M / Scotch is the wear :) it seems to be more wear-resistant then the cheaper store brands
not a big deal but it also seems to leave less residue when you take it off there
Just got a new roll. Plain ol electrical tape. 57 cents at Wal Mart.

If any adhesive sticks to the blade, just dab the area with the used piece and it will take it right off
If your just starting out, use "black" tape.
The "red" is high speed tape for experienced honers.
If you don't recycle, then use the "green" as it is environmental friendly.
I like 3m blue or purple. Red camouflages any injury too well, purple is regal and blue just looks cool.
