Usually by changing the angle of your approach to a more heel forward angle of attack, you might also have to adjust from a straight even X stroke to a more swooping X stroke
The adjustment of the stroke is a learned skill, the more razors you honed the more you will be able to adjust the exact point of pressure between the bevel and the hone...
The hones are nortons so no I had to lap them with the flattening stone they came with... I did not lap the flattening stone however.. If that makes a difference
There's a chance the flattening stone is not flat.

You can check your stone by placing a straight edge like a steel ruler on the stone and shine a flash light from one side checking for light leak underneath from the other side, the same can be done with feeler tape. Repeat this diagonally and orthogonally, the later at multiple divisions alomg.the stone.
The only thing I did not see mentioned is that the razor in question had a very deteriorated edge that hen had some work done on it. It is not a regular bevel set, it is a restoration bevel set which is always going to take quite a bit longer simply due to the amount of metal that has to be removed to completely for a bevel where none had been. That should be a very nice shave when you get it dialed in.
So should I continue with x strokes only, or circles + x strokes? And how much pressure?
And if it helps, here are a couple of close up photos of the razors current conditionhttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...6408782c65.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...bc1f4b5c29.jpg
You can use both strokes X & circle while setting the bevel . The stroke will not matter, but pressure will a lot. You can easily cause a wire edge with pressure. Also set the razor down for a little while let your fingers dry out and then feel of the edge. It just might feel sharper. Wet fingers or pruned finger lose the touch. This is just my opinion :)
I'm assuming "wire" edge is not good.. Okay thanks. I'll ease up on the pressure and do circle + x strokes continuously for a while and hopefully this will get the bevel set.
